Today, we recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day by honoring and celebrating the enduring presence, cultures, contributions, and resilience of tribal nations.
We acknowledge the rich histories of Indigenous people–the first people of this country– and the ongoing importance of lifting up and protecting Indigenous rights, dignity, and ancestral sovereignty.
Today—and every day—we remain committed to advancing civil rights and a democracy in which the rights and dignity of all people are protected.

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC, and 16 other civil rights organizations filed an amicus brief defending the federal Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Program.
The brief argues that the program is constitutional and that Congress can act to address longstanding funding inequities between higher education institutions. Minority-Serving Institutions help expand access to higher education for first-generation students, immigrant students, low-income families, multilingual learners, and students of all backgrounds.
Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA) and Tennessee are trying to reverse more than 50 years of equal rights progress by forcing the government to ignore demographic realities and inequality, and ultimately strip funding from institutions that have already been systemically denied equal funding. Doing so would be deeply harmful to higher education and profoundly harmful to students.
We stand with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities in defending the HSI Program and the opportunities it makes possible.

An unforgettable evening of courage, leadership, and solidarity in the fight for justice.
On September 23, 2026, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law hosted its Higginbotham Leadership Awards Gala, celebrating champions of justice and equity. Together, we honored leaders whose work protects the right to vote and strengthens the communities at the heart of our civil rights movement.
✨ Our 2026 honorees:
🗳️ Stacey Abrams, activist, author, and voting rights champion, received the Robert F. Kennedy Justice Prize for her leadership in protecting democracy and expanding civic participation.
⚖️ Mamie Cunningham received the Courageous Client Award, representing the clients in the Mississippi State Conference of the NAACP v. State Board of Election Commissioners. A lifelong advocate, Mamie has helped Mississippians register to vote and challenged barriers that diminish Black voting power.
Guided by hosts Melissa Murray and Symone Sanders Townsend, the evening celebrated people who stand up, speak out, and keep working toward a more just future. Help the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law carry that work forward. Make a gift today: lawyerscommittee.org/donate

Tonight, the Supreme Court rejected the Trump Administration’s attempt to impose and enforce sweeping new mail-in ballot delivery restrictions that threatened to severely disrupt the midterm elections.
The Court denied the Trump Administration’s emergency request to put the lower-court injunction on hold, meaning any new USPS mail-ballot rules cannot take effect for this year’s midterm general election.
“Tonight, at least for now, one avenue for sowing election chaos has been blocked,” said Damon Hewitt, president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
The ruling comes one day after the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia issued a preliminary injunction blocking the same Postal Service rule in NAACP v. Trump, brought by the Lawyers’ Committee for the NAACP, Common Cause, and Black Voters Matter.
As a result of these rulings, the U.S. Postal Service must continue delivering mail ballots as it is supposed to—free from interference or restrictions that could have caused chaos and mass disenfranchisement.
We encourage Americans to check their voter registration status and to vote early. Voters planning to vote by mail should mail their ballot as soon as possible, track their ballot online where available, and contact the nonpartisan Election Protection hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE or 866ourvote.org with any questions.

History was made at Arthur Ashe Stadium over the weekend.
Ben Shelton became the first Black American man in 54 years to reach the U.S. Open men’s singles final, following Arthur Ashe in 1972.
More than five decades later, the moment is a powerful reminder of the doors Ashe helped open—and why preserving the stories, symbols and legacies of Black achievement matters.
Earlier this year, the Lawyers’ Committee helped secure accountability after a white nationalist group targeted and destroyed a mural honoring Arthur Ashe in the Richmond community where he learned to play tennis:

We congratulate Ben Shelton on a historic run and celebrate a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
A legacy defended. A legacy continuing.
Who’s watching—and what does that mean for our privacy? 👀
Leah Frazier, director of the Lawyers’ Committee’s Digital Justice Initiative, joined Joy Reid on The Joy Reid Show to unpack the civil rights and privacy concerns surrounding Flock cameras.
As surveillance technology becomes increasingly common in our communities, Leah explains why we should be asking important questions about privacy, civil liberties, and accountability.
The Digital Justice Initiative advances racial justice in the digital age, challenging discriminatory technology, invasive surveillance, online hate, and other digital harms that disproportionately impact communities of color. Through litigation, advocacy, and public education, DJI works to ensure technology protects—not undermines—civil rights.
