“This is a clear public health crisis; I don’t know why it’s subject to political interference at all,” says @JessSpieker. What point in having experts, she wonders, and training engineers on #RoadSafety, if we ignore best practices and allow people to die?maisonneuve.org/article/2022…

New from me: Almost 2 years after I filed an FOI, I finally got bureaucrats’ communications from Aug. to Nov. 2024 as Premier Ford prepared and launched his war on bike lanes
Internal records show provincial bureaucrats refuted Doug Ford’s arguments before he ordered Toronto bike lanes removed. thestar.com/news/gta/doug-fo…

Internal docs show MTO staff warned against Ford govt’s bike lane removal: “No empirical evidence that ties bike lanes as the sole source of congestion, nor is there data that shows removing bike lanes help with better traffic flow” thestar.com/news/gta/doug-fo… #onpoli #bikeTO #TOpoli

The Toronto Police arrested Aly Van Wyck-Smart, a Paralympian with cerebral palsy who was protecting part of the bike lane from removal.
On the bright side, the construction workers put the bollards back and said we'd won for the day.

Is it too much to ask for publishers of articles advocating for cycling routes on secondary roads in Toronto to require their authors to submit a proposed alternative?
@RDiManno, is this the sort of secondary route you're thinking as an alternative to the Yonge Street lanes?

On Friday night nearly 1000 people on bikes rode west to the site of Ford's first incoming bike lane removals, Bloor just east of Islington.
Strength in numbers. #criticalmass

Another day, another Toronto cyclist hit by a driver — this one in a gap in the Yonge bike lanes, which @fordnation and @PrabSarkaria are ripping out.
Get ready to see a lot more of this on Yonge, Bloor, and University.
TOMORROW! If you are struggling in the aftermath of road violence, you are not alone. You are warmly welcome to join us on Sunday Sept 13 at 1:00pm for our monthly peer support meeting. You can join in person or on Zoom (please DM us for the link).

In recent years, two cyclists have been killed after being struck by vehicles near Avenue Road and Bloor Street:
In April of 2024, the driver of a flatbed truck killed Ali Sezgin Armagan, 39. Armagan, a recent immigrant from Turkey, was delivering food for Uber Eats when he was hit.
Three months later, the driver of a dump truck hit and killed an unnamed 24-year-old woman at Bloor and Avenue. A construction dumpster blocking the bike lane forced the cyclist to merge into traffic, where she was fatally struck.
Doug Ford's culture war on bike infrastructure will force cyclists to compete with drivers for space. It will make everyone less safe and lead to more deaths

It's called a dooring Patricia D'Cunha and it's illegal pursuant to the HTA. What's with the victim blamey language @CityNewsTO ? You're better than this and the victim deserves respect.

I can't wait to take my toddler to daycare through a ravine. I'm sure it'll be entirely safe and not add a half hour to my commute. Time is money, for motorists only I guess. Grift Griftford never disappoints.
Today the Court of Appeal confirmed what I said on Bloor Street W., in Etobicoke on Tuesday: where bike lanes go is a decision for elected governments, not for courtrooms.
For almost two years, the future of Toronto’s streets sat in legal limbo. Drivers sat in gridlock. Businesses on Bloor West watched their sales fall. The Mayor spent those two years cheering on a courtroom fight instead of fixing the street. That’s two years this city doesn’t get back.
Here’s what today’s decision doesn’t change: the best people to decide what happens on Toronto’s streets are still Torontonians. My message to Queen’s Park is simple. You’ve made your point. Now let the city do this job, with the communities who live on these streets, and work with Toronto’s next mayor instead of around him.
My commitment from Tuesday stands, and today removed the last excuse for delay. As Mayor, I’ll take the bike lanes on Bloor Street West, from South Kingsway to Resurrection Road, out in my first year and restore the vehicle lanes. And I’ll build cyclists something better than a painted line on an arterial road: a real network of trails in our ravines and hydro corridors, plowed in winter, and routes on quieter streets. That promise doesn’t depend on any courtroom, and it never did.
Mayor Chow should accept today’s decision, end the legal chapter for good, and sit down with the province on an orderly plan. If she won’t, voters can choose a mayor in October who will.

The popularity of street festivals shows that there’s enormous public support for pedestrianized streets in Toronto.
That’s why I’m bringing forward a motion to the next city council meeting, seconded by Councillor Chris Moise, who launched the Church Street pedestrianization pilot, to create a Pedestrian Streets Program for Toronto.
Pedestrian streets are proven to contribute to the success of local businesses and residents’ quality of life.
I’m asking city staff to identify the right streets for festivals, seasonal and permanent initiatives, and report on resource requirements, and where it works considering safety and functionality, to create pedestrianized streets across Toronto.
Many global cities including Paris and Copenhagen, and as close to home as Montreal, have successful pedestrian streets - and it’s time that Toronto become the world class city we aspire to be.
