🇺🇦🇵🇹 A war they know beyond the headlines
For some, war is an update in their news feed. For our defenders, it is a lived experience that will remain part of their lives forever.
Veterans shared this experience during an international conference on the war in Ukraine at Universidade Lusíada in Lisbon.
The conference offered an opportunity for a direct conversation with Portuguese students and lecturers about developments on the front line, the needs of Ukrainian service members and the human consequences of war. Russia’s abduction and deportation of Ukrainian children was among the topics discussed.

After years of war, even the chance to simply exhale and feel at peace takes on a special meaning.
The palaces and the ocean are impressive, but what stays with us most is something else — the heartfelt smiles of our veterans and their families, and the joy of spending time together.

Our heroes in Portugal will remember this day for a long time!
Just when they thought nothing could surprise them, a vast oceanarium opened up before them, filled with sharks, graceful rays and countless colourful fish 🌊
The children simply didn’t want to leave, while the adults found themselves standing still, mesmerised. For a few hours, everyone felt as though they had stepped into an underwater world.
“And the oceanarium — that was a whole other wow!” the participants wrote to us after the visit.

🇺🇦🇵🇹 Each group’s stay in Portugal includes one special tradition — meeting Mr. Marcelo.
Yes, that very Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Portugal’s former president. He has supported Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion and has been meeting with our defenders and their families for years.
And the loveliest part is that Mr. Marcelo has kept this tradition even after his presidential term ended. As before, he makes time for personal meetings, heartfelt conversations and words of support.
We’re sharing photos from this warm meeting and sincerely thank Mr. Marcelo for his kindness, care and unwavering support for Ukraine! 🤝💙

“Restart” Continues: Time to Recover Together 💙💛
War changes the lives not only of those who defend Ukraine, but also of their loved ones. This time, veterans of the Omega Special Operations Center of the National Guard of Ukraine have joined “Restart” together with their families.
25 participants are already in Portugal, at the Fénix Rehabilitation Center in Ourém, where they are being welcomed by our Portuguese partners.
This visit brings together two programs: “Restart”, focused on veterans’ rehabilitation, and “Choven”, a recovery program for children and families who have lost loved ones in the war.
Over the next two weeks and more, participants will have time to rest, focus on psychosocial recovery, spend time with their loved ones, and discover more about Portuguese culture.
We’ll be sharing moments from this visit and updates on how the recovery programs are progressing.

I’ve been asked to try and help a Ukrainian foundation initiative that supports the children of Ukraine’s heroic fallen defenders - a cause which obviously needs no explanation of its vital importance. Called I.C.F ( international charity foundation) “ Friends of Ukraine Foundation”
and their specific project - Choven Kids / Children.
Just Imagine after a family loses the husband / father, or Mother, not only the terrible loss initially, but how the children and family cope and try to live, day to day, as UA Government help after a loss takes time. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of life for children who have experienced the impact of war, either through loss of serving parents or loss of their homes due to attacks on civilian infrastructure by Russia.
Along with supporting the AFU with your fantastic ongoing support as I’ve always done, I have been asked to help fundraise / push visibility and reach if possible, by a contact in the UA Gov who supports this initiative. So in time, I’ve decided I’m going to try to do my bit to help support them and this worthy cause going forward. We have already helped them in a small way already - a few of the concentrators were given to the charity who also support the AFU. 👊
Friends of Ukraine Foundation are not on X presently, but I’ve indicated they need to be, as it’s where the kind hearted souls of the world make the magic happen, so I’ve been told that they are going to set up an account here shortly. You can read up here :
