I understand the sadness and frustration readers have right now.
Cancelling Washington Post subscriptions hurts journalists, editors and staffers, not our owner.
WaPo is more than our owner and management.
Please don’t give up on us. Many of us aren’t giving up on you all.

On this day in @APStylebook history, “percent” was changed to “%”
I still write out “percent” on first drafts.
I still don’t like how “%” looks.

Being a journalist does not in any way make you a celebrity, nor entitle you to act like one online or in person. That’s all ✨

I told my editor I just ran out of creative juice today. She cheerfully cut me slack and gave me more time. Good human editors and healthy newsrooms are priceless. NPR 🙏😊📻

Job news! The @projo is hiring TWO reporters, one general assignment and one for sports. It's a big deal for us to get two additional reporters on the team, so share with any journalists looking for a job. Maybe that's you? Here are the links to the jobs:

A Writer's Halloween: 5 things writers find scary.
1 Deadlines
2 An editor saying, "It's off to a good start..."
3 Working on an 800-word piece and realizing you've written 1,000.
4 Editors who don't have time to talk.
5 Coming up with a great idea, then reading it in the NYT.

Two years ago I started a little thing: @fdnotebooks. It’s still a little thing, but I haven’t lost any money yet!
Thank you to all who have supported me in my effort to make reporting a little easier with a solid and inexpensive notebook.

We just published a complicated story. I want to explain why, because newsrooms aren’t transparent enough about how we make decisions on sensitive and fraught stories.

I’m bursting with joy that @ChalkbeatIN has a new office at @unioncampusindy! Complete with a slide! My snake plant and @aleksappleton’s succulents are the first inhabitants of our new office.

This is amazing - the hospital’s last patient from the Uvalde shooting was finally released. 10-year-old Mayah Zamora.

Really enjoyed these 2 for their encouragement & acknowledging the extra weight of being a person of color in journalism. This gathering of journalists is the most diverse I’ve seen in my decade in the industry. The future is bright! Now for the work of retaining us #RFAGathers22

Back in the day, I was the quiet, sensitive features guy they would send in to cover the aftermath of disasters a week or two after the big breaking news. So Oklahoma City after the bombing, Bosnia at the end of the war, NYC after 9/11, Slidell after Katrina. I know, go figure.
