"We're not doomed by an absence of climate policy or climate action. We're doomed by 1.1 trillion tonnes of atmospheric CO2 plus other GHGs, hundreds of zettajoules of excess ocean heat and thermal inertia, 1.4 W/metre Earth energy imbalance... amplifying feedbacks...etc." 🙏🌏
"Because [reality] is subjective, unreliable, imprecise, and, if it were to spread to the general populace, would only lead to panic."
This is dangerous thinking for scientists because they have no right to withhold information from the public for any reason. The only job of science and scientists is to convey reality to the public, so to shun reality is the definition of absurdity. How can a scientist describe reality as "subjective, unreliable, imprecise" when it's none of those things and his job is to determine the nature of reality? This is the mindset of scientists who aren't actually scientists at all, but are just number-crunching modellers who, as Schellnhuber wrote, suffer from 'probability obsession'.
"We tend to vastly overestimate the value of anything that comes out of complicated mathematical algorithms, and look down onto lowly intuitive thinking."
The writer here is confusing intuitive thinking with critical thinking, although intuition is an key aspect of critical thinking. But a past article by Knorr and others does note a weakness for critical thinking by scientists.
Consensus climate scientists still have basic things to learn about how Earth's climate works. This is a tragedy due to capture by vested interests, mainly fossil fuels. These are the forces keeping scientists in a bubble, sheltered from reality.
We're not doomed by an absence of climate policy or climate action. We're doomed by 1.1 trillion tonnes of atmospheric CO2 plus other GHGs, hundreds of zettajoules of excess ocean heat and thermal inertia, 1.4 watts/metre Earth energy imbalance, Polar Amplification and loss of sea ice, loss of ice sheet albedo, amplifying feedbacks, inexorable sea level rise, aerosol unmasking, etc.
Knorr is right, scientists are not friends of activists, or anyone else for that matter. We have had enough warnings. Kevin Anderson: "The expert community currently just reinforces Davos." We have to listen when people we trust tell us who they are.

In case you missed my big November El Niño update, the full 90+ minute recording is now available (it's long, but information and data-packed--so consider using YouTube's auto-transcript feature to find segments of interest). Lots of good questions today! youtube.com/live/wLp1tfo9lD4

Your 'moment of doom' for Nov. 7, 2026 ~ 1.15 million Hiroshimas per day.
"A rising EEI indicates that heat is accumulating in Earth's climate system at an increasing rate (or, in other words, that global warming is accelerating)."

The planet just experienced its moistest October on record, beating the previous record from 2023 by 2.3 percent — and exceeding the 1991-2020 average by 7.2 percent.
This extra moisture in the atmosphere can be harnessed by storms, loading the dice toward more extreme rainfall events, like the devastating ones that have dotted the U.S. in recent weeks.
October marked the third consecutive month that a new moisture record was set, a streak that will probably continue into 2027 because of a record El Niño stacked on top of a warming climate.
Expect a higher frequency of extreme rainfall events in the months ahead. It's probably going to get more intense.

United States: Severe flooding has hit McCaysville, Fannin County, Georgia, after up to 10 inches of overnight rain caused the Toccoa River to rise 16 feet in just 12 hours, reaching a record 18 feet and breaking the previous record set in 1990.

Global temperatures have tied their all-time highest value on record at 2.04C above preindustrial levels (measured as a change from the 1850-1900 period) in the Copernicus/ERA5 dataset. The prior record was set back in November 2023.
The world has now experienced seven days above 2C.

We could breach the IPCC's 2C target NEXT YEAR. A 5% chance, so not vanishingly small. It is a real possibility, an instant 0.5C increase. The IPCC's central estimate for 2C is 2042.

The preliminary global sea-surface temperature for November 4th was more than 7.5 standard deviations above the 1982-2011 mean. In "normal times" the odds of this would be about 33,000,000,000,000-to-1 against.
Next up, 8σ?

On Nov. 3rd, the global mean surface temperature anomaly was 2.03°C above the 1850-1900 baseline, the 4th hottest day on record and just 0.03°C short of the all-time record, set Nov. 18, 2023.

One of my favorite ways of putting climate change into perspective is using standard deviations. It’s too bad most folks don’t relate to it. Because, for people who understand this way of expressing likelihood, 7.22 sigma is otherworldly

And so it came to pass that November 4th, 2026, recorded 2.03°C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial baseline, tied for the 4th highest anomaly on record.

Again, I don't think people are actually processing how weird & unpredictable things are & are going to continue to be. We are really entering the toto, I don't think we are in Kansas anymore stage of climate disruptions.
The polar vortex is collapsing. That’s not unusual, but experts say that the timing this year is “unprecedented”—here’s what to know

Humanity is entirely at the mercy of the Earth system. Everything is absolutely, completely, out of our control, out of our hands. Anything is possible. If the El Niño causes 0.4C or 0.5C, the global population won't know what hit it.

On November 1, 2026, the global sea-surface temperature anomaly exceeded 7 standard deviations above the 1982-2011 baseline for the first time, reaching 7.12σ.
In "normal times" this would be about a 1-in-1,800,000,000,000 event.

As far as our species is concerned, the greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere won't ever stop pumping heat into the oceans and warming the planet. Global warming only stops when the planet's temperature is high enough that it radiates as much energy as it absorbs.

FLORIDA’S EXTRAORDINARY DELUGE 🌧️
Wait for it…
An estimated 1.88 TRILLION gallons of rain in 57 hours across the area shown—enough to cover 145,000 football fields, including end zones, 30 feet deep!
Radar estimates 30 inches near Palm Bay, with multiple torrential rainfall peaks stretching down Florida’s east coast. The radar-map area saw more than 2 dozen distinct Flash Flood Warnings, including rare #Florida Flash Flood Emergencies.
The geographic extent and repeated extreme totals make this an extraordinary, perhaps unprecedented, non-tropical #rain #flood event.
A historic El Niño favors wetter Florida weather. Today’s warmer oceans and atmosphere also increase the moisture available to fuel extreme downpours. #elnino
