To the Mina ecosystem, When I joined the community 3 years ago, the future was bright. @o1_labs had shipped mainnet the previous year, solidifying Mina’s role as pioneers in zero knowledge cryptography by launching the first production zk rollup AND designing the first decentralized prover marketplace (Snarketplace). Around that time, Mina Foundation spun out of o1Labs to steward the Mina brand, community and treasury. I wasn’t here yet, but I understand the rationale to decentralize the core teams’ decision-making. Mina’s strength is its cheap, fast verification of zk proofs, which means that it can and should be the most decentralized network out there. The team structure should reflect that. In retrospect, it was too early to separate the team building from the team marketing the product. To give an example, I ran developer-focused grant programs to get apps built with Mina’s tooling. We marketed zkApps as ‘private smart contracts’ and tried to recruit from the Ethereum ecosystem. In reality, the development environment on Mina is vastly different from Ethereum. Mina doesn’t have self-executing contracts, nor does it store state on-chain. There was a lot of excitement, but developers ended up spinning their wheels trying to use a toolkit that wasn’t ready for them. We learned and iterated along the way, but there was too much time, energy, and funding churned in the process. We ran these programs independent of o1Labs, and while we all wanted to work more closely together, organizational inertia consistently got in the way. 3 years later, the frustration that the Mina community feels can be explained by Conway’s law, which states that the structure of a system is determined by the social structure of the organization that designs it. Phrased differently, products mimic organizational structures. The early L1 successes were shipped by one unified team, and we’ve struggled since then. I’m now confident that had the teams been under one roof, we would have communicated to better define what Mina was, who it was for, and how developers could use it. While there’s a lot of work ahead, today’s news is a step in the right direction. I believe o1Labs' public, technical leadership is long overdue, so we can put the organizational friction behind us. Josh’s experience in helping unify the Cosmos ecosystem is what Mina Foundation needs for an interim CEO, and the path to a decentralized treasury is clear. Most importantly, Mina is infinitely scalable in its design. It scales O(1) in number of transactions and blocks, and O(n) in number of accounts. This is the only design that allows a decentralized network to avoid centralization over time and usage. Vitalik recently said that the Beam Chain proposal is trying to replace Ethereum’s current design with something like Mina’s design, “a zk-friendly minimal, simple, beautiful L1 from scratch,” but it’s likely to take 5 years. o1Labs shipped this same design over 4 years ago… let's see what Mina can do with o1Labs stepping back into the driver's seat. A special thanks for all of the Mina supporters, developers, and node operators who have kept Mina chugging along through the noise. Finally, I’d like to thank both Kurt and Evan for their efforts to drive Mina forward over the years. The Mina ecosystem exists thanks to Evan and Izzy, and for that we’ll always be grateful.
Over the last month, the Mina Foundation board has engaged with the Mina community to receive feedback. As a result of this feedback, we believe the best approach for the ecosystem is for o1Labs to lead and take ownership of the technical roadmap for Mina. Mina Foundation’s focus will be to accelerate the creation and adoption of a decentralized treasury. Josh Cincinnati, Mina Foundation Board Member and President of the Interchain Foundation Council, will be stepping into the role of interim CEO and President of the Board for the Mina Foundation. Josh brings a wealth of experience leading ecosystems through transition periods, first as Executive Director of the Zcash Foundation, and recently by shepherding the Interchain Foundation to help unify the Cosmos ecosystem. Kurt Hemecker and Evan Shapiro have decided to move on from their roles at the Foundation. We are grateful for their leadership and stewardship over the years, and look forward to their continued contributions to the ecosystem. This marks a new chapter for Mina Protocol as we continue building a future powered by participants.

Read this thread. Guys. IT IS TIME TO GIVE BACK TO THE OG. ECC and the @Zcash core devs and researchers have ALWAYS published everything in open source, and discussed everything in public discussions/GitHub issues. The industry now is mostly working in private repositories, fighting over small details, making GM every day, doing airdrops with no real values, rug pulling, stealing others work, and many other fucking shits I'm ashamed of in this industry. We won't be there without them. Again, to every Zcash contributor and the Zcash community. THANK YOU. You will always have my support.
Yesterday, @jswihart announced that ECC has runaway for 1 more year only during his talk at ZCon VI. See: youtu.be/XlKADl3bhVo?t=1073 And I think the whole Crypto-Chain community should take a pause to consider this seriously. It's time to give back.

Today, I am very proud to release the first video of Cryptography Academy (@cryptoacademy42). It is the follow-up on the announcement I made end of last year (xitter.cf/dwillems42/status/1871…). The link is available 👇. This first session is going through the project description, with the first attendants (@guillaumeclaret, @0xMushow and @andrea__dlm), in addition to the first course on basic algebraic structures used in cryptography. We have recorded already 4 videos, and we plan to go on a pace of one recording per week. The different categories we aim to dig into over the months are: - pen&paper mathematics regarding the primitives, definitions, lemmas, theorems, etc used in cryptography. We focus on giving a high-level description of them, enough to give the intuition to the audience. - implementation of primitives in a programming language that can be used to build softwares, like Python, Rust, JavaScript, OCaml, Ruby, etc. - describing in a formal language like Rocq (previously @CoqLang) or @leanprover the definitions, lemmas, theorems and proving them. It completes the first category by being more formal, and convincing us about the intuitions given first. - going into real-world bugs we can find in softwares deployed in production. Cryptography.academy is a project that I have wanted to create for years. If you know me IRL, I have been talking for years about my wish to create a school (in Belgium - like I shared here xitter.cf/dwillems42/status/1808…) to teach (applied) mathematics. I hope the momentum will stay, and I will be able to achieve it in some years. It completes the list of projects I am involved into today (@leak_ix for the cybersecurity, @o1Labs for the implementation of primitives) and where I aim to be involved in the next few years (formal verification). This concept is mainly inspired by the great work of @AnnaRRose focusing of zero-knowledge cryptography with @zeroknowledgefm, the series of videos from @cryptodavidw and many other actors in the industry and academia. We start with zero-knowledge cryptography, but the goal with cryptography.academy is to go beyond these, and aims to be a channel where I share my broad interests in applied mathematics, including general cryptography, formal verification, type systems, quantum computing and co. I also hope to include the web2 and web3 cybersecurity aspects by investigating real-world bugs. Let's use abstract mathematics to build concrete applications. Stay tuned for more sessions.
Big announcement. I'm exhausted of seeing people asking for thousands of euros and dollars for courses about ZK and math. With @0xMushow and @guillaumeclaret from @FormalLand, we're gonna start recording our sessions we do together reg. cryptography and formal methods FOR FREE. More info coming. We start in January 2025.

2024 will end perfectly for @leak_ix. Our enterprise customers keep telling us they want to renew their contracts for 2025 (and beyond). I'm so proud to have built this company with @gboddin. In 2025, we're gonna grow. No token, no VC. Just a product. [email protected] or DM
