New guest post by @LGConwayIII. Link in reply.
"I remember the day that science died...It was at a Faculty Senate meeting almost five years ago at the University of Montana, my former employer. I was called a conspiracy theorist for citing studies run by Ivy League researchers. That day, I became convinced that progressive academia had become more like a cult than a science. To understand that moment requires understanding the slow death of science at my former university."

The Constitution prohibits the govt from restricting people for speech or punishing them for speech. There are no exceptions for immigrants on noncitizens. This is clear from a simple reading of 1A. That prohibition includes preventing the govt from deporting people for speech.
FIRE won a huge First Amendment victory today.
And before anyone mischaracterizes it: This ruling does NOT say the government must admit anyone, issue anyone a visa, or grant anyone citizenship.
It says that once a person is lawfully here, the government cannot deport them because they engaged in protected speech.
The government cannot tell a legal immigrant: An American is free to say this, but if you say it, you’re out.
That’s the principle we sued to defend. And today we won.

My number one dating rule back in my 20s was that the person must have an ORCID.
I can’t tell you how many gals I approached in the bar who said they had one when they didn’t.
And yes, I would verify it.

The Guardian interviewed me about my face perception research. Apparently, this work has been cited to support the legitimacy of "facial analysis services" provided by people who are part of the...

I had thoughts (see below). They also cite @ExtravertedFace and @vaillancourt_dr. I love responsible science journalists like Laura O'Connor 🫶

I do not think it’s anti-racist to suggest black academics need to be “guided” not to do fraud. I think lots of black academics wake up every day and don’t do fraud and it’s weird and paternalistic to suggest this apparent con artist was let down by institutions and mentors.
Replying to @aljhlester
2/2 Arday has been let down by institutions supposed to guide him & seems prone to making dubious claims. The errors of successful Black scholars will always be rooted out & amplified while those of white counterparts may not be, …

This might be one of Stan Bowman’s most underrated moves as Oilers GM
Reports came out that Carolina was going to offersheet Bouchard at $10-11M after losing out on him in the rumored Rantanen deal. Bowman acted quick and gave him a slight overpay to get the deal done. Fast forward a year later and the contract has aged amazingly. If we lost him to Tulsky, we’d look like Anaheim does with the Carlsson situation

It’s been a year since Evan Bouchard was extended at $10.5M AAV for 4 years
Looking at other contacts, I think it’s fair to say this has aged as one of the best deals in the league for Edmonton

John Adams was invited to speak at the 50th Fourth of July celebration in Quincy. He was too old, too weak, to appear in person, and in fact would die that day. George Whitney went to his house, determined to leave with some remarks that he could share with the crowd. What did he want to say?
“Independence forever.”
Whitney, hoping to leave with something more, asked if he had anything to add? “Not a word.”
