What I’m most amused by rewatching Babylon 5 is the episode where Ivanova sits shiva for her father. She makes a point of saying Kaddish in English so Sinclair can understand what’s being said. She then proceeds to say something that definitely isn’t Kaddish.
For some reason I find myself rewatching Babylon 5. It’s not aged brilliantly but still surprisingly good.
The more I encounter the arguments of ‘antizionists’ the more I come to realise that they don’t really understand what Zionism actually is.

“Casted” instead of “cast”. A small bit of evidence that the people who support the Jew-hating Green Party are not the most literate bunch.
Today on made up shit that never happened…
The argument as to whether Israel has the right to exist or not is the stupidest argument ever.
Israel *does* exist. It’s not going anywhere. Get used to it.
Can’t quite believe we’re now seeing an openly antisemitic political party in the UK. Zack Polanski will go down in history as a sick human shield used by Green Party antisemites to deflect from their racism.
The dude seems to have forgotten what Palestinians like to do at music festivals.

Rarely have I seen someone be quite this wrong.
There is no biological way to define race. It simply comes down to people agreeing a particular group is a race.
Jews have shared genetic ancestry, culture, history, language, and religion. If Japanese are a race so are Jews.
When the hell did people start calling neurodivergence neurospicy? What a stupid bloody way of describing it. I’m autistic, my brother is autistic, two of my three children are autistic.
Nothing fucking spicy about any of us whatsoever.

Since the discourse began in Israel about ethnically cleansing Palestinians from Gaza, we have repeatedly heard the word “voluntary” used to describe it.
It is chillingly familiar language. The same word was used in the Arab world to describe the ethnic cleansing of Jewish communities.
“Voluntary” is a disgusting word when it is used as an excuse for ethnic cleansing. Ethnic cleansing does not become acceptable simply because you call it “voluntary.”
Turns out calling yourself a genocide scholar doesn’t prevent you from being a piss poor excuse for a scholar.
In 1940, the Nazis had probably not even killed 3 per cent of Polish Jews. But they had destroyed their communities, herded them into ghettos, and were starving and brutalising them. This was already genocide, and would have been so whether or not they went on to exterminate them. Educate yourself—the Final Solution is not the standard of genocide. And it is shameful to glibly use it to excuse the Israeli genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza, which has shown broadly similar policies of ghettoisation and starvation to those that Nazis carried out in the early stages of their genocide.
Gay marriage is not illegal in Israel. Israel just doesn’t have a civil marriage system, all marriages are done by the various religious authorities in the country. But same sex marriages done outside the country are recognised just the same as all others.

A fair amount of hostility toward Israel seems to be based on resentment that Jews were victims of the holocaust and other atrocities, and that this makes Jews believe themselves to be superior.
I don’t know where that assumption comes from, but for the record being a victim, as an individual or as a collective group, doesn’t make you saintly, it just makes you a victim.
Maybe there’s something to do with western Christian assumptions that Jesus being the ultimate victim, and the ultimate goodness, suggests that victimhood is elevating. Jesus aside, it’s not.
The only positive thing one could say about your group being victimized means you weren’t the perpetrators, but it doesn’t mean that you have some generally higher moral status forever than any other group and I don’t recall ever seeing any actual Jewish person suggest suggesting otherwise.
I think I’d go with the 6m Jews plus millions of others who were murdered bore the brunt of the Holocaust. Rather than the 750,000 people who were displaced for trying to murder thousands of Holocaust survivors.
But that’s just me.

For a few reasons but amongst them:
1. Judaism is the only of the three abrahamic religions that actually believe that independent nationhood outside of themselves is what’s best for the world. Our “end of days” narrative doesn’t call for a mass conversion of the rest of the world. Quite the opposite, we’re called on to be a model for other nations to emulate within their own lands and cultures. The word goy is not a slur (Jews are themselves referred to by this name in the Torah) it’s actually a term of respect that indicates are recognition of other cultures and nations and their value. Social welfare is actually way more efficient when done on a community to community basis which is why the goal was never to make the whole world Jewish but in the words of the Baal Shem Tov
לכשיפוצו מעיינותך חוצה קא אתי מר
“When the wellspring overflows he will come (the time period of global tranquility)”
The goal is to practice our tradition in a way that proselytization is unnecessary, to conduct ourselves and our communities in a way that our values seem so obviously exalted and are “overflowing” into the world around us uplifting every other nation. They see how a community rallies behind each other, takes care of the needy, the disaffected, the sick etc… and they want that for themselves. So they emulate it within their own communities.
The prophets command us
והביאותים אל הר קדשי ושמחתים בבית תפלתי עולתיהם וזבחיהם לרצון על מזבחי כי ביתי בית תפלה יקרא לכל העמים.
Bring other nations to my holy place and let them visit and pray, not to convert them, but in order to affect positive change in their own cultures.
2. Also, historically, we probably would have been murdered for proselytizing.
Israel has absolutely nothing to do with a Jewish family trying to buy a company in America.
Unless you’re @MarkRuffalo.
Criticising Israel is fine so long as you don’t do it in an antisemitic way, but he keeps dancing over the line between honest criticism and antisemitism.
The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest. Criticizing the actions of the Israeli prime minister, a military technology contract, or the executives who supply it is not the same as criticizing Jewish people. This critical and necessary dialogue is then dishonestly framed as being anti-Israel. To be clear, my views come from my own political convictions and should never be interpreted as hostility toward Jewish people, for whom I have deep love and respect. Everything I know about acting, activism, and humanism has been profoundly shaped by the Jewish friends, colleagues, and loved ones who have been integral and family throughout every point of my life.
This merger has real consequences for real people, and for the entire country. Scrutinizing the Ellisons, including Oracle’s business built on data, surveillance technology and government contracts, and the serious threat to editorial freedom and the loss of a livelihood for thousands of families, is fair and necessary. The $111 billion deal would hand one family control over CNN, HBO and Warner Bros., backed in part by foreign money whose influence on editorial decisions has never been fully explained to the public.
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have called for serious national security review, and regulators still haven’t given the public a real answer. Until they do, the merger shouldn’t move forward. Now is the time to dive boldly into all these issues, not step back or concede.
