I can finally talk about Mass Effect Universe. Since Bioware closed I can now reveal that I was part of the Mass Effect Council, saw what BioWare was building, and provided feedback during development. • Set 600+ years after the Reaper War • You play as a customizable N7 agent • Instead of being a walking gun rack, you're a cross between John Wick and James Bond • Shepard's legacy preserved, regardless of your ending • A galaxy divided into three major factions • Humanity, Krogan, Batarians, and more allied together • Council races forming their own alliance • The Geth emerging as a third superpower • A galactic Cold War instead of another Reaper style invasion with a shadowy adversary • Geth-built megastructures • Connections between the Milky Way and Andromeda • Experimental technology implanted in you as a unique point of difference • Hacking and manipulating the environment • See through walls, identify systems, remotely trigger hazards and more • Handcrafted missions like ME1-3 • But with Hitman-style freedom in how you complete them • Brutal close-range executions • Squadmates who can clash with each other • Romance wasn't being sanitised • Liara returns - now an incredibly powerful Asari Matriarch From what I saw, BioWare was making Mass Effect for us, the fans, not for people who don't exist. It looked incredible. And now we may never get to play it. Find out more here: youtu.be/ZOWrTNazZxM #SaveMassEffect

Some artists painted the worlds we wanted to explore. Some designers built the dungeons we never forgot. Jennell Jaquays did BOTH. ❤️🎲 Born October 14, 1956, Jennell would have turned 70 today. Dark Tower. The Caverns of Thracia. That spectacular Dragon Mountain cover. From wonderfully creepy pen and ink illustrations to sprawling dungeons full of choices, her work helped shape the D&D so many of us grew up loving. Whether you knew her name or not, you probably knew her art. I was fortunate enough to talk with Jennell quite a bit here on Twitter. Getting to chat with one of my childhood idols is something I’ll always treasure. Today, let’s celebrate the imagination she shared with us, and the adventures we’re still having because of it. What’s your favorite Jennell Jaquays adventure or piece of art?

With 24 hours left to go on the ShadowSun Revised Kickstarter campaign, we are at 1,224 backers. Thanks to everyone that has been a part of this campaign. Here is my final pitch ShadowSun presents you with a setting packed with unbridled evils to fight, deeply challenging moral questions, and no judgment of what content might be "too much" for you to handle. Don't take my word for it either, check out the 144 page free quickstart. The full books will let players begin with knowledge from a generous gazetteer, surrounded by a vast unforgiving surface world, with a dark, terrifying underworld beneath their feet. Use new unique mechanics and tools designed to make GMing easy, with innovations on the base ShadowDark structure like caravan travel, brewing customized alcohols, and world-spanning cataclysms. Both books are done and in editing. They will be ready for PDF release in a couple of weeks when Kickstarter gives me a confirmed backer list, then I will proceed to proofs & print after that. kickstarter.com/projects/chu…

In 1980, I wrote the roleplaying game "Call of Cthulhu". At that time, every single person I knew who'd heard of Lovecraft did so because I had told them personally. Lovecraft was an unknown. A vanishingly obscure pulp author. When Chaosium asked me to write the roleplaying game, we expected Call of Cthulhu to be a real niche produce. To sell a three or four thousand copies tops to the few hard-core Lovecraft fans in the world, and then go out of print. I put my heart and soul into it anyway because I loved Lovecraft so much, and I wanted to make sure my few fellow Lovecraftians would have the best game possible. Well, instead of the game being based and fed by Lovecraft fans, instead the game PROMOTED Lovecraft and spread knowledge of his works everywhere. It quickly became Chaosium's best-selling product. Every gamer knew about it, even if they didn't play it. My proudest achievement is that I have had literally thousands of people walk up to me at conventions and tell me that they read Lovecraft after playing Call of Cthulhu. Others (three times tearfully) told me that they were so excited to see that someone else knew about Lovecraft. This last event is now rare, because now everyone knows about Lovecraft. I am so glad I have been a tiny part of bringing cosmic horror to so many.

The truth is spreading. Make it go viral. Lay low the defilers of the founders and their era that made D&D and RPGs possible! Hasbro and WotC did not create this industry but they are sure burning it and its history to the ground! hyperborea.news/traditional-…

We've been getting a lot of questions lately about how the Internet Archive digitizes books. The short answer: page by page, by hand. You may remember our viral 2021 video of Eliza Zhang scanning a book. That's still how we do it. Meet Eliza, and learn how we scan books: blog.archive.org/2021/02/09/…

Can somebody please give me the criteria for when we're supposed to care about suicides please? Deaths of despair have been on the increase for many years under Austerity & nobody gives a shiny shite. Meanwhile Mental Health "services" are unfit for purpose. Still nobody cares.

My hairdresser lives in Frinton, the posh part of the Clacton constituency, to my surprise she told me that not only is everyone talking about how they’re going to vote for Count Binface but a local resident has built a replica out of bins. Imagine if he fucking does it 😂

Martin asks MPs: “Do you know what your equivalised income is?” as that’s what some water firms ask vulnerable people to see if they’re eligible for a social (ie capped costs) tariff. A clip of the utility regulation evidence at Commons Public Accounts committee. Watch the full session at parliamentlive.tv/Event/Inde… PS MPs later asked Ofwat to explain. It said it is household income adjusted for size and composition, allowing for a fair comparison of living standards across different households, but accepted it “could be explained more clearly”.

Genetic studies of modern Rapa Nui people and ancient DNA from pre-contact skeletal remains have confirmed Polynesian ancestry while revealing something unexpected. Traces of Native American ancestry in some Rapa Nui individuals — and the timing of this genetic admixture appears to predate European contact. This biological evidence supports theories about prehistoric contact between Easter Island and South America — contact that Thor Heyerdahl famously argued for in the 1950s, proposing that South Americans had reached Polynesia before European arrival. The mainstream archaeological consensus holds that Polynesian navigators made the contact — voyaging eastward toward South America, making contact with Native American populations, and returning with both genetic material and the sweet potato, a South American domesticate that appears across pre-contact Polynesia. But the presence of this genetic signature raises questions that continue to be debated. The sweet potato's presence throughout Polynesia long before European contact is unambiguous evidence of trans-Pacific connection. Whether it was Polynesians reaching South America, South Americans reaching Polynesia, or both, remains contested. What is no longer contested is that it happened. The ocean between Easter Island and South America is 2,300 miles wide. Someone crossed it, in both directions, before Columbus was born. #drthehistories

Marcia Lucas, editor of Star Wars and former wife of George Lucas, died at 80 of cancer. Her family left a statement: “Marcia will be remembered as a brilliant storyteller, a trailblazer for women in film, a loving mother and grandmother, a generous host, and a loyal friend whose humor and sparkle filled every room she entered. Her influence on film is indelible, but those who knew her best will remember the way she made life feel more vivid, more beautiful, more fun, and more full of love." Did she deserve more credit for her work?
