The problem is that 80% of shale oil depletes from the reservoir in the first 18 months after being drilled. Then you need to drill even more. This is known as the "red queen effect." The higher the consumptions is, and today it's higher than ever, the more you need to drill, just to keep production flat, let alone increase it.
