We treat all joules as equal and it's slowing down the energy transition. We just open sourced The Exergy Imperative — a complete guide to the most underused concept in energy. It explains why measuring Exergy transforms how we make energy decisions. github.com/cdimurro/the-exer…

Electricity is going to win thanks in part to the help of information technology. Fossil fuels simply cannot compete with this type of compounding progress.

This is clearly visible when looking at how closely GDP growth is tied to electricity consumption, and how decoupled it is from fossil fuel consumption. The idea that fossil fuels drive GDP growth is becoming a myth. In reality, electricity consumption drives GDP growth.

We are releasing several tools that allow anyone to easily calculate the quantity and quality of different forms of energy. 1. exergyfactor.com Simple energy quality calculator. 2. github.com/cdimurro/quantity… Agent native Python library for calculating the quantity and quality of different energy streams. 3. github.com/cdimurro/the-exer… Agent native Python library for analyzing the exergy, emissions, economics and health impacts of different processes and energy technologies. All three are completely free and open-source.

The Exergy Imperative now comes with a Python Library that anyone can install to gain insights into their energy infrastructure and the energy efficiency of different processes. If you're curious about how much exergy you're wasting, install this. github.com/cdimurro/the-exer…

Clean sources of energy are already meeting over 100% of electricity demand and 60% of overall energy demand. The remaining challenge is to replace the 40% of energy demand that is still being met by fossil fuels with something else.

Wasted energy is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Going forward: can we please stop counting wasted energy as energy consumption? If it doesn’t go towards providing useful work then it shouldn’t count, because then it’s just anergy.
Natural gas is on track to become the #1 source of U.S. energy

This is a great chart. It breaks down global energy system in 2025 by region. Great way to visualize where each region of the world gets it energy from, and how dominant fossil fuels still are in providing total energy supply.

China went from getting most of it's energy supply from Coal to getting most of it's energy supply from Solar in 10 years. The assumption that new energy demand in China will be met with Coal is no longer true. New energy demand in China is now mostly being met by Solar.

This chart speaks for itself. No one can deny the role that renewables are playing in the energy system anymore.

Solar currently generates over 10% of all of the electricity generated in the U.S. That’s more electricity than all of the 2,300 hydro power plants across the country produce. nitter.cf/ExergyLab/status/20677…
Solar currently uses 0.04% of total U.S. land area and 0.07% of U.S. farmland.

Clean sources are now meeting all electricity demand growth. The next milestone is for clean sources to meet all energy demand growth. The second milestone is much more difficult to achieve, but it's also much more important. A lot of work left. nitter.cf/nicolasfulghum/status/…
20 years of progress: At the beginning of this century, growth in electricity demand meant growth in fossil fuels. First wind power, and now solar, have changed this. Now, solar and other clean sources can structurally meet all growth in demand.

Batteries are the key enabler of the energy transition. More batteries means: - A more efficient energy system - A more reliable energy system - A more affordable energy system - Less greenhouse gas emissions - Less reliance on fossil fuels nitter.cf/AssaadRazzouk/status/2…
Battery storage is now the fastest-growing power tech on Earth: In 2025, we added 110GW of battery capacity in a single year, more than the highest-ever annual capacity additions from natural gas The storage revolution isn't coming. It is already out-building gas at its peak
