The draft as class struggle, a way for the ruling class to kill tens of thousands of poor Ukrainians who might otherwise cause problems for the state. The US saw this during the Vietnam War and it affected military performance so much the draft had to be abolished
A mutual friend was mobilized in Ukraine and killed by a Russian bomb after escaping military service in Israel. A second drug addicted Instagram rapper with mental disabilities was mobilized into the army, and so far he seems to be fine, unlike his deceased musical collaborator. Otherwise, the government is getting rid of unnecessary reasons to be exempted from mobilization, like a wife with disabilities or a large family. A parliamentary official has drawn attention to a mobilization holding centre keeping mentally disabled men and pensioners behind its walls. Another mobilization officer committed suicide on the job, and there were yet more mysterious deaths during the mobilization process. A man stabbed to death the doctor that falsely declared him fit to serve, a killing that was praised by many on social media. Mobilization offers beat a doctor into a bloody mess when he forgot his draft documents. A colonel in the security services was beaten and extorted of thousands of dollars by mobilization officers. Western-funded media is outraged at the increasing frequency of civilian attacks on mobilization personnel. But there was one story that really mattered this past week — a USAID-funded journalist was almost mobilized by the army. After outcry from his colleagues, he was released. It turns out that when he wrote articles saying ‘Everyone must fight’, that didn't refer to veterans of the highly demanding NGO circuit. These are some of the mobilization stories in my latest article. Link in reply

The article @EventsUkraine and I wrote last year on the first stage of the current crisis remains, I believe, the only one that puts this recent manifestation of Ukraine's political conflict into any social theory. Unfortunately, Jacobin has since paywalled it, so here it is in open access. academia.edu/143629454/Ukrai…

How did Ukraine "solve" its notorious mass-desertion problem? Last December, Ukraine classified its AWOL statistics as a state secret. And it turned training bases for the (often forcibly) mobilized into concentration camps. xitter.cf/EventsUkraine/status/2…
The Ukrainian army has come up with some new methods to deal with desertion over the past 6 months - Mining the perimeter of training camps - Psychologically breaking newly mobilized troops through constant beatings and torture, often resulting in death - Setting dogs on troops trying to escape, beating them to death in front of troops to set an example, dragging them from quadbikes to scrape off their skin - Mass mobilizing drug addicts from drug substitution clinics (methadone). These troops can be tortured and expended more easily - The resulting human machines are called 'one-time uses' by commanders. Huge losses for assault operations with solely informational purposes Full article in reply

"And this is what truly disturbs the Briton or Frenchman about Russia — the blurriness of the lines, the lack of clear racial categories. A Mongol horde. Total chaos. A Chechen mongrel is the Wizard of the Kremlin."

This essay is, by the way, the best critique of Peter Pomerantsev's books on Russian politics and propaganda that I have read. @EventsUkraine effectively shows how his arguments ultimately boil down to the racism of post-Soviet comprador liberals rallying to save the "civilization" in which they aspired to carve out a privileged niche for themselves.

It's strange that nobody has made a major film or TV series about Semyon Mogilevich. He was even removed from the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list when Washington realized he was untouchable, and still reportedly lives freely in Moscow in his late 70s. The Kiev-born gangster built a transnational criminal empire in banking, energy, fraud, arms trafficking and money laundering and survived the Soviet collapse and outlasted the Russian mafia wars. Mogilevich makes the fictional Don Corleone look like a puppy, and in terms of global reach and sophistication, he probably surpassed even Meyer Lansky.

Amidst all the brouhaha of the charges against Yermak it it is important to remember something @EventsUkraine has highlighted: nobody ever really gets arrested by NABU and SAPU. This is at most about restructuring revenue flows or a shakedown. It's just Reiderstvo.
