Food prices took a breather in August, with falls across fruit, meat, seafood and coffee. Beef fell 1.1pc and lamb & goat 0.8pc for the month, but both remain 9.4pc higher than a year ago. Short-term relief, but red meat is still the standout annual food inflation pressure.

US beef imports are surging as domestic production falls, but most of the extra beef is not heading to supermarket steak cabinets. Around 68pc of imports are lean trim/lean beef, with imports now supplying an estimated 39pc of US ground beef production.

Very dependent upon the result of the US enquiry into imported sheepmeat. A negative finding and punitive tariff could take some of the heat out of local prices at the end of the year. Worth keeping an eye on.

Still limited access to MENA region isn’t great either. Flows there are sitting at around 12.5% total exports when it’s usually closer to 20% of the trade volumes.

Possibility of an earlier run of new season lambs too given the milder winter could see price pressures creep in earlier than normal if spring flush comes ahead of normal time. Percentiles of lamb throughput (average season) versus previous seasons like 2026 shows an earlier run.

STR shows the restocking has already begun episode3.net/livestock/sheep… the big concern is the outcome of the US imported sheep meat enquiry though. A negative finding there could be a re disaster for the sector.

It’s fair to say there is going to be a meaningful swing to sheep in 2027 and ‘restocking’ will drive the market for the uterus. Anything to do with sheep productivity it is showtime. Sheep are plan B and plan A cropping is looking into a very hazy 2027

Australian sheepmeat exports remained subdued in August, down 27pc from both last year and the five-year average. China bucked the trend, but the US and MENA have weakened as elevated prices test demand. The export mix is shifting as customers adjust to higher Aust sheep prices.

I'm not sure that having 600-700 voting members is an appropriate threshold for being the representative body for an industry that has about 52 THOUSAND producers. May as well give me the job - my organisation has around 2,700 beef cattle members. beefcentral.com/news/cattle-…
