“The big worry is that Abiy might try to solve all his problems at once, by invading Eritrea, possibly a regime change move and also a land grab for the Red Sea port, and solving his problem with Tigray at the same time.”

“For much of the past century, policymakers have treated the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula as separate strategic regions divided by the Red Sea. That distinction is now evaporating,” writes @alanboswell. bit.ly/4AXuUPm

I have a new essay out in @ForeignAffairs about how the Horn of Africa is getting sucked into the Middle East at an ever accelerating pace-- and about how the hard division between the two regions was always ahistorical.

Stopping Ethiopia's Return to War
Long-simmering tensions have turned to large-scale fighting in Ethiopia. It is not too late to avert a return to costly, bloody war.

Recently, I joined the Africa-West Asia podcast @CARPObonn to take a step back and discuss the entangling Horn + Gulf regions across Red Sea. Spoke here about historical ties, post-Arab Spring, the Saudi-UAE rift, Iran war fallout, and where now.

War has returned to northern Ethiopia, thanks to elites who did not have the courage to give peace a chance.

President Kiir is dismantling South Sudan’s unity government to lock in power.
Whether he calls snap elections or pushes another extension, the endgame is the same: entrenching rule for himself and his family.

Northern Ethiopia is slipping into renewed war.
African leaders backed by key outside powers notably the U.S. should urge both sides to deescalate, show restraint, and return to the negotiating table.

🔥With wars raging in Somalia, Sudan & Yemen, not to mention those beyond, a major new conflict in Ethiopia is a nightmare scenario. The humanitarian consequences are potentially horrific and there’s a non-trivial risk that other countries get dragged in.

Hard to overstate how ugly this could get for the region, barring unexpected deescalation.

On the #Sudan war, I say:
Peace efforts are stuck in the mud. Until we see new political will within the
region to end Sudan’s war, the conflict looks set to keep expanding and spilling across Sudan’s borders.

One of the things we’ve learned is that civil war is contagious. We saw that with Rwanda, Burundi, DRC; with Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast; with the Balkans; with Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos. And now Sudan’s civil war is challenging South Sudan and Chad. We need a serious effort to end the slaughter in Sudan—eg by pressing the UAE to stop supporting the RSF militia as it engages in mass murder and mass rape.
The spillover of Sudan’s civil war threatens to plunge Eastern Chad into deeper instability. The region is already experiencing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. With massive displacement, intercommunal tensions and cross-border violence
