If Indian parents stopped financially supporting their children after graduation tomorrow, the streets would expose a crisis no government is prepared for.
Millions of young adults survive because their parents quietly fund their education, housing, food, healthcare, marriages and even unemployment.
Indian parents don’t just raise children.
They subsidise society.
Governments and society should acknowledge how much this invisible family support system actually holds India together.

यह एक गुजरात स्थित कंपनी का प्रॉडक्ट है. इसे प्राकृतिक रूप से मिनरल वाटर बताया जाता है. इसमें कैल्शियम, मैग्नेशियम, बाइकॉर्बोनेट्स, सिलिका होता है.
इसे अरावली रेंज का पानी बताया गया है. एक और ख़ासियत है कि इसे शीशे के बोतल में बेचा जाता है.
केंद्रीय जल आयोग की 2019 की रिपोर्ट पर भारत सरकार की एक प्रेस विज्ञप्ति के अनुसार, “2021 और 2031 के लिए औसत वार्षिक प्रति व्यक्ति जल उपलब्धता क्रमशः 1486 घन मीटर और 1367 घन मीटर आंकी गई है. 1700 घन मीटर से कम वार्षिक प्रति व्यक्ति जल उपलब्धता को जल संकट की स्थिति माना जाता है और 1000 घनमीटर से कम वार्षिक प्रति व्यक्ति जल उपलब्धता को जल कमी की स्थिति माना जाता है.”

Cashless health insurance is legally sanctioned house arrest.
The doctor officially discharges you at 9 AM. You are fully recovered, your bags are packed and your family is ready to take you home.
Then the hospital administration steps in: "Sir, the insurance TPA approval is pending. Please remain seated in your room until we receive the final payment."
You then spend the next 8 to 12 hours held hostage in a ₹15,000-a-day hospital room.
You are no longer a patient but you are collateral. The hospital doesn't trust the insurance company to actually pay, the insurer is deliberately stalling to find a typo in your medical history to reject the claim and you are stuck in the middle of a corporate standoff.
We live in a country where UPI settles transactions in 300 milliseconds and automated trading algorithms move crores in a microsecond.
The system is designed to exhaust you. They want you so frustrated and desperate to go home that the next time you get sick, you just pay the cash upfront and file for a reimbursement which they will conveniently reject 45 days later citing "insufficient documentation."
If my policy is active and the hospital is in-network, the final discharge should be an instant and automated API settlement. Man I paid insurance company for this service.
Until we force insurers to adopt automated clearing, stop calling it a cashless facility.
Call it what it actually is: an extortion racket with a waiting room.

This is "Contempt of Court" in effect. If the Supreme Court does not step in to rectify this gross violation of due process and Citizens' Rights, it is not a functional institution in any sense of the term. And if so, one pillar of our Constitutional structure is now defunct.

I want to briefly explain why I joined Abhijit Banerjee, Peter Diamond, Esther Duflo, Paul Krugman and Joe Stiglitz in signing the letter on the California billionaire tax: ft.com/content/94ec0fee-53ab…
In principle, I am not convinced that permanent wealth taxes would be necessary if the tax-transfer system were designed optimally.
But the US tax system is very far from optimal, and has been for decades. As I have documented in my research (for example, here: mitsloan.mit.edu/shared/ods/…), labor income is taxed much more heavily than capital income.
This asymmetry creates two distinct problems.
First, it makes the tax system highly regressive at the top. The very rich, who receive much of their income from capital or can use accounting tricks to reclassify their income as capital income, pay remarkably little in taxes. For example, a business owner who runs their own company should receive a significant part of their income as labor earnings for their work as CEO. Instead, they can take their compensation in stock and borrow against those holdings to finance whatever consumption they desire, minimizing their tax obligations. Even their heirs may avoid paying these taxes.
Second, the asymmetry distorts automation decisions: it effectively subsidizes machinery and AI relative to hiring workers (for example, here: brookings.edu/articles/does-…).
These distortions have allowed a small number of people to amass vast fortunes without paying their fair share of taxes, and have fueled excessive automation.
The resulting inequality is a problem in its own right. It is all the more dangerous today because our institutions have become fragile, allowing the very wealthy to exert growing control over the political process.
A temporary wealth tax can therefore be justified on three grounds: (1) it partially reverses the effects of more than two decades of tax avoidance by the very wealthy; (2) it acts as a brake on their growing dominance over the political process; and (3) it may pave the way for more comprehensive tax reform at the federal level.
The California billionaire tax is not perfect. For example, a federal tax would lessen risks related to capital flight, and removing the rigid earmarking of the revenues for specific purposes would enable the proceeds to reduce the national debt. Nevertheless, with few other options on the table, I believe the California proposal deserves support.
Today's #ECI story by @RitikaChopra__ finally blows the lid off the real reason for this insanely obsessive, urgent SIR push -- its not about a "purified" (curated) voter roll alone but a centralised, all-India voter list, available at the click of a button in Delhi, to be fully controllable from Delhi ONLY, cutting out local electoral officers.
