As we head to the polls, we’re reflecting back on some of the things we accomplished at city hall over these past four years with some of the people who helped to champion them. 🧵 1/2

As our MP, I haven’t heard Hedy Fry address public safety concerns along the Helmcken corridor. Yet she supports her son for mayor, despite his backing of another OPS at 900 Helmcken and the neighbourhood’s troubled history. Her constituents deserve to know where she stands.
Today is voting day for Vancouver Municipal elections. I do not usually get involved in municipal or provincial elections. But I will be proudly voting for my son PETE FRY, FOR MAYOR today; not just because he is my son, but because he is my son, i know him to be a principled, hardworking, passionate man who has lived in and loved this city all his life. He is intelligent and cares deeply about public policy, he is also a bridge builder and can work with others to find common ground, effectively… good luck Pete

Was the donation to the childcare centre eligible for a charitable tax receipt, and did Eby’s family claim a tax credit? If so, that makes this grand gesture considerably less altruistic than he’s making it sound.
STATEMENT FROM BC NDP LEADER DAVID EBY: "Securing a deal with the Prime Minister, BC and Ottawa will work together to reach a newly negotiated childcare funding agreement with a December 1st deadline. My family has benefited from a wonderful local childcare centre and I will keep fighting so that every family benefits from quality childcare across our province. A couple of years ago, the childcare centre that one of our children was attending was designated as a $10/day site. When that occurred, we chose as a family to make a donation to that excellent facility. We felt that we did not need that discount and we wanted to make sure that the childcare centre could provide other supports for families in the community. We will be making a similar donation to the childcare centre for our youngest child who attends the same facility."

That too, but calling involuntary care “prison” ignores people so unwell they can no longer care for themselves. Do we leave people in circumstances like these to deteriorate on the streets in the name of personal choice? ✅ An easy YES on Question 2 of the plebiscite for me.
We need to fund voluntary care for people who want to recover but can’t access those beds today.

Replying to @JarrydJaeger
Choosing an income amount to jack taxes that is just slightly over his annual salary is the most Eby thing ever.

People talk politics with me because they know I’m vocal. Funny thing: when they complain about how things are going, I ask who they voted for. Almost every time: NDP 👀 At some point, you have to connect the complaint to the vote

NEW - @Dave_Eby says he will create a new tax bracket on people who earn more than $1m annually, to tax the wealthiest British Columbians to help pay for health care costs.

I live downtown and people are mad. Four councillors voted against fighting the 900 Helmcken drug site. The province later cancelled it after listening to downtown. Two of those four, Fry and Bligh, now want to be mayor. Voting records matter. Advanced voting starts next week and election day is Oct 17. #vanpoli

Well, look at that. 👀 The graffiti covering 900 Helmcken that we posted about has now been painted over. Credit where it’s due. This is exactly what we’ve been asking for: basic property maintenance and respect for the surrounding neighbourhood 🙏🏼

The more people speak up, the more others will feel comfortable doing so. Staying quiet because you’re afraid of being labelled “uncompassionate” hasn’t made our neighbourhoods safer OR helped the people struggling in them.
A Business owner won’t stay quiet about the chaos in front of his business at the notorious Hotel Canada supportive housing building. Vancouver, BC

A 25 lb dumbbell precariously propping open a window above a public sidewalk at the Murray Hotel. At what point does basic safety and oversight enter the conversation?

A successful independent research database studying addiction and homelessness gets shut down, the data destroyed, and future access moved under government control. đź‘€ Yeah, not suspicious at all.
BC’s catastrophic drug policies were made possible by a Govt order to destroy data and censorship by Pharma-funded academics: “Somers … provided a copy of a July 2022 email from the British Columbia Centre on Substance Use, which lobbies for safe supply, showing that they lobbied for a conference to disinvite him from speaking at an academic conference “…the email to the conference organizers from BCCSU expressed hope that “this work will not be given a credible platform.””

Meanwhile at 900 Helmcken. Vancouver’s Graffiti By-law requires property owners to remove unsightly graffiti within 10 days of receiving a City notice. Perhaps it’s time for some bylaw enforcement here, too.
