An MLS defender to his core. A huge hypocrite on merit based promotion/relegation. In other words, same old same old. #ProRelForUSA
🇨🇦 Concacaf president Victor Montagliani is seen as a ‘unity figure’ by those plotting against Gianni Infantino, the embattled head of Fifa. But who is the former insurance broker? And can he oust Infantino? Telegraph Sport explains all ⬇️ telegraph.co.uk/football/202…

As the Vic bandwagon builds, perhaps he should be called out on this teeny bit of hypocrisy. #ProRelForUSA

What does “growth” actually mean? Revenue, audience, valuation, infrastructure, and participation measure commercial growth. Promotion measures sporting merit. They are related, but they are not interchangeable. A club can grow commercially without being the best team on the field, just as a promoted club can face higher costs, greater risk, and a worse P&L. Promotion is not a financial award. It is the mechanism to answer to a simple question: who has earned the right to compete at the next level? Or more simply put: "Who is the best?" That is what makes the closed-league argument fall apart. You cannot market yourself as the home of the most elite level of competition while using centralized wealth and purchasing power to insulate yourself from the most fundamental form of competition: the possibility that someone else can outperform you.

Why is the only way to measure growth by promotion to you? NFL has grown exponentially. It didn’t get promoted. EPL has grown to the most popular league in the world. It didn’t get promoted to that. It earned that by TV deals and $$$$.

This is classic central-planning thinking. “Just have MLS build more stuff.” Meanwhile every successful soccer nation relies on thousands of independent clubs competing for players, fans, sponsors, and promotion, not one organization trying to engineer the entire talent pipeline.
This will make a lot of people mad, but one of the obvious ways to "fix" the US men's soccer program (not that it really needs a ton of fixing) is for MLS teams to work with academies in a bunch of cities and set up a minor league system like the MLB and NHL have.

If MLS wants to copy something cool the rest of the world does, maybe it should try promotion and relegation instead.
*sigh* I knew a MLS club out there would try this And it’s somehow more embarrassing than I could have imagined

The Balogun reversal is a sideshow compared to the real FIFA/@ussoccer scandal. FIFA says sporting merit, solidarity, promotion and relegation, and subsidiarity are the foundation of the football pyramid. I agree! Yet none of the 2026 World Cup hosts are truly held to that standard. The U.S. protects the closed MLS cartel. Canada has no real open pyramid. Mexico suspended pro/rel for years. So why does FIFA preach universal principles everywhere else, then look the other way here? That’s the real scandal.

Watching how Americans are loving the World Cup really goes to show how trash MLS is. They're not into it because it's a terrible product. It's just facts.

The idea from US Soccer Twitter that the onus is somehow on fans to support MLS, instead of on MLS to earn that support, is a level of entitlement I didn't know was possible. (1/2)

Remember this… European USMNT players get judged based upon how well they perform against other national team level players in top 5 leagues. MLS lifers get judged based upon how well they play against Aaron Long and Walker Zimmerman. These are not the same. 😬

I hope after today, a lot of USMNT fans understand the importance of players like Pulisic, McKennie, Jedi, Dest, Balogun, Pepi, Weah and yes even Gio Reyna, are to the team.
