TERI along with other partners including @ElevateClimate ,@IIASAVienna ,@nlenvironagency and @dgapev organized an official side event, “Holistic approach to climate-resilient, just development: Translating evident into action” today, at COP29, Baku, Azerbaijan. @DrVibhaDhawan , Director General, The Energy and Resources Institute ( @teriin ), in her opening remarks, said, "The side event welcomes participants to a collaboration between scientific and policy communities, emphasizing the need for scientific knowledge and policy innovations to address climate change.” In the keynote address, Dr Zinta Zommers, Climate Science and Practice lead, @UNOCHA , and Vice-Chair, working group II, @IPCC_CH , highlights, "Climate change impacts vulnerable communities disproportionately, despite their minimal contributions." This was followed by a discussion on 'Insights from adaptation and mitigation research communities'. Mr Reinhard Mechler ( @reinhardmechler ) from IIASA, emphasized, "Mitigation, adaptation, and loss and damage, are key components of climate action." Speaking on climate mitigation and finance strategies, Dr. Bas van Ruijven, ( @vruijven ) IIASA, underscored, "Cost-effective mitigation measures are assessed globally, considering equity principles such as responsibility, capability, and needs." Mr Detlef Van Vuuren ( @DetlefvanVuuren ), PBL, said, "We have Twenty institutes collaborate on climate policy, analyzing current policies and evaluating their impact on emissions.” Mr Manish Shrivastava, Senior Fellow, TERI, spoke about his discussion paper, “Financing Just Transition: Synergies Between NCQG and JTWP.” "There is a need to align climate finance governance with JTWP, which means ensuring that funds are accessible, timely, and affordable, thereby supporting the flow of low-cost capital." he adds. Highlighting the role of partnerships in increasing climate finance to Global South,  Dr Abdullah Fahimi ( @_fahimi ), DGAP, said, "Partnerships are crucial for accelerating climate action in the Global South. Today various types of partnerships exist, including multilateral, intergovernmental, and public-private partnerships.” The discussion was moderated by Dr Isabela Schmidt Tagomori (PBL) The session was followed by a 'Synthesis roundtable'. Mr Jiwesh Nandan, Distinguished Fellow, TERI, highlights "TERI project in India that explored the complexities of transitioning from a coal-based fuel system to a more sustainable one. The project resulted in a national framework for just transition and a discussion paper highlighting the impact on women.” Ms Patricia M Longwani ( @patricialongwan ), highlights, "Climate finance should prioritize justice for marginalized communities." Mr Christoph Bals ( @christophbals ), Director, @Germanwatch , underscored, "The need for a dynamic process to bridge the gap between scientific studies and financing for climate action. He proposed a polluter-pays approach, where fossil fuel companies contribute based on their historic emissions, to address the imbalance in the capitalist system where profits are privatized while costs are socialized.” Mr Tom Mitchell ( @tommitchelliied ), Executive Director, @IIED , said, "The current international response system for climate change impacts is inadequate, particularly for the poorest and most marginalized. A new, more coordinated and inclusive system is emerging, focusing on national plans, direct cash payments, and a broader range of financial sources.” Mr Bruno Brasil, Director, Department of Sustainable Production and Irrigation, Ministerio da Agricultura ( @Mapa_Brasil ), said, "Brazil emphasizes the importance of equity and common responsibilities in climate action, as outlined in the UN Convention.
