ALT July 28, 1937 • Soap Box Derby 🏁 Photos taken on this day during the 2nd annual Soap Box Derby in Edmonton sponsored by the Journal. A warm sun beat down on a crowd estimated at 12,000 to witness Lindsay Cuthbertson (15) win the derby after racing down the one-quarter mile track on McDougall Hill Rd. in just 24 seconds. Cuthbertson proudly announced his car cost only 50 cents to build. The sophomore event was the second time Cuthbertson competed after the inaugrual race in 1936. Police in a special sidecar motorcycle (2nd & 3rd photo) raced up and down the 'McDougall Speedway' during the event tending to mishaps and overturns speedsters. Once the racers made the treacherous sharp turn at the base of McDougall Hill Rd, they would fly down the remaining stretch with the victor celebrating as they pass the finish line, near today's 100th St. and Rossdale Rd. 🏁 📷 CoE Archives EA-160-1580 / 1581 / 1588
