🚨 A controversial suggestion has been made about Manchester City, with calls for Sky Sports and other broadcasters to stop showing their matches live until the club's ongoing financial case is resolved. “There has to be a strong case now for Sky and other channels ceasing to broadcast Manchester City games live until their punishment has been decided. Their games are ghost games.” It's a statement that's bound to divide football supporters. The argument is that with so much uncertainty surrounding City's case, every result, every league position and every trophy they compete for is being viewed through the shadow of the allegations. Those backing the idea believe broadcasters should take a stand until a final decision has been reached. But others will argue that Manchester City have the right to defend themselves and should not face restrictions before the proceedings have concluded. And then there are the supporters, who have continued following their club throughout the controversy. Whatever your opinion of Manchester City, stopping their matches from being televised would be an extraordinary move for English football. Should broadcasters really consider such a drastic step, or should football carry on as normal until a final verdict is delivered? 👀

Football is in crisis here. Genuinely think people will fuck it off if City aren’t punished accordingly, and soon. The limbo only makes it worse. I’ve always resisted conspiracy theories about officials, mainly because if that’s what’s going on, what are we all doing here? But why make appointments that feed the conspiracy? Chris Kavanagh, from Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, for this game? When trust is already on the floor, when people are already questioning the integrity of the competition, surely you look at that appointment and think: why invite it?

To be fair, on reflection, Liverpool can just say they have irrefutable evidence they won the game.

If you were caught cheating in a high-stakes card game, you would be kicked out of the casino and the police would be called. You wouldn’t be allowed to carry on playing while your lawyers challenged the 114 times you’d been caught out. #PremierLeagueFarce

How long is the stench of the “sham” going to corrode the meaning, worth, and very essence of the Premier League? Listening to commentary about Manchester City’s players matching the defiance of their ownership and triumphing in adversity. Listening to fans chorusing the names of the men running the club, wearing masks or displaying banners of their faces and jibing: “We’re Man City, we’ll cheat when we want.” Victory being framed as “a lovely moment,” a show of togetherness as though some grave injustice has been imposed on City, rather than their hierarchy being found by an independent commission to have orchestrated financial doping on an industrial scale. Their opponents and the rest of us wondering if any of this actually matters now and how much of it ever did? There can be no business as usual pretence. We need a full stop to the absurdity.

Kavanagh’s orginal target was Araujo but switch to Grav as his influence on the game grew
Greater Manchester’s Chris Kavanagh has been itching to do that all game. Both those cards from Gravenberch were beyond soft as was the one for Araujo first half.

Very much my feelings too, @premierleague will need to talk with @NeilDocking for his expertise on how sports entertainment attracts fans without having sporting integrity xitter.cf/simon_hughes__/status/…

When journalists are writing like this, @premierleague @SkySportsPL should realise the trouble they are in. They should be in an emergency meeting today to issue sanctions tomorrow

🚨 Patrick Vieira on Ryan Gravenberch receiving a second yellow card after fouling Jérémy Doku. 🗣️“Honestly, I’m starting to believe Manchester City need to be investigated again, because what exactly is going on here? We haven’t even finished discussing the old financial charges, and now we’re watching decisions like this in a game of this magnitude. How is that challenge worthy of a second yellow card? Gravenberch was having an excellent game, Liverpool were competing with City, and one questionable decision completely changed the direction of the match. Within minutes of his sending-off, City took control and went on to win 3-0. I’m not saying the referee has been bribed, but the Premier League needs to understand why decisions that can change an entire match are being made so casually. If the referee gets it wrong, there should be accountability, regardless of which club benefits. And let’s be honest, if this exact decision had gone against Manchester City, their fans would be screaming conspiracy from every corner of the internet. City fans can celebrate the three points all they want, but don’t expect everyone to ignore the circumstances surrounding this game. When a controversial red card changes everything, people have every right to question the officiating. Manchester City have already spent years under scrutiny over financial rule breaches. The last thing this league needs is another cloud of suspicion hanging over its biggest decisions. Investigate the officiating, explain the decision, and let the football speak for itself. Because if this is the standard of refereeing we’re accepting now, what exactly are we supposed to trust?”

Football is hard to love right now. You wait 3 weeks for it to return, only to watch your side succumb due to a combination of injuries sustained on international duty, an inept refereeing performance and ultimately lose against a team that shouldn’t even be allowed to play.
