It’s finally out now in @ACSCentSci and better than ever!

Is 2026 the year of arginine?
Covalent discovery and chemical proteomics have largely focused on cysteine and lysine, leaving other functionally critical residues underexplored.
In our new preprint, our joint Seiple and Zaro Lab team asked: Can arginine be targeted covalently? 🧵
To test whether arginine reactivity can be functionally leveraged, we appended a ninhydrin warhead to a reversible cyclophilin A inhibitor, achieving selective covalent engagement and attenuation of enzymatic activity.

We’re pleased to welcome back @ScrippsGradPrgm alum @IanSeiple as a professor of chemistry. His work advances synthetic routes to complex molecules, like antibiotics to address antimicrobial resistance, and expands into cancer and aging research. More at: ow.ly/o4fp50TCz7O

You are what you eat! We leveraged chemical proteomics to discover that macrophages redeploy intact surface proteins made by their cancer cell meals during phagocytosis. These proteins are functional, and redeployment may explain the etiology of the TAM. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Unlike axolotls and zebrafish, humans can’t regrow organs—at least, not on their own. But by harnessing the body’s ability to repair tissue, Assoc. Prof. @MichaelBollong is developing drugs to regenerate human organs from the lungs to the heart. 🧵👇

Mutations in the kinase domain of RTKs like MET can drive disease. Small molecule inhibitors target these mutations, but acquired resistance poses a challenge. In our latest preprint, we've extended our previous 🧬DMS of MET to study this exact problem. doi.org/10.1101/2024.07.16.6…

Replying to @SarpongGroup
@SarpongGroup is a Ghanaian-American chemistry professor @UCBerkeley. Sarpong works on natural product total synthesis to understand biological systems and to develop novel therapeutics. Sarpong and his research group have published over 135 papers! #BlackHistoryMonth
Just left the meeting at #ACS with the biggest smile and many tears thanks to @CarolynBertozzi taking the platform she had as the keynote to truly speak about what she believes in. One day I’ll hear her speak about glycochem but I’m glad today was queer activism as a chemist!
This was my first exposure to a research project 5 years ago when Rory Guild introduced me to the Gerwick Lab @GerwickL. It’s been amazing to watch it pass hands and perspectives to reach where it is at today with the hard work from Ethan @22tengo6 and friends along the way 😊

Also because I’m a multifaceted individual, if you like this paper consider supporting my fundraiser for the AIDS Walk SF. I’m walking this year to support efforts made my organizations who work tirelessly to prevent new HIV/AIDS transmission and educate against the stigma.

If you don’t like this paper you should also consider supporting this fundraiser so I can at least do one thing right.

Capturing the structural changes throughout a protein’s conformational ensemble is essential to uncovering protein function. But modeling this is HARD.
