New exemplification for the EYFS Profile published by the DfE. Important for all YR staff to familiarise themselves with the 'pitch' of the criteria &for SLT and Y1 staff to be aware of what the data will 'mean' in September for the incumbent children...

Just remember this is not statutory. Follow Birth to Five Matters and Development Matters 2021. They have some great links to writing in the early years.

Discovery learning involves trying things out, experimenting and getting it wrong. This is how young children learn. Instruction is a far less efficient way to do this, as anyone who has spent any time with 3-7 year olds can tell you.
You can tell children things as many times as you want. You can read a perfectly designed script that explains phonics. And then that child will turn around and say 'How can I become a caterpillar?' and your speech is halted in its tracks.
What we say to children and what they learn are very different things. Children learn through discovery and play. If we don't understand that, then we do them a grave disservice.

We really do have a serious problem if @Ofstednews are going to wilfully misuse research in order to promote their own idealogy.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! @Ofstednews please take note- from one of the authors of the research you cited!

Imaginative play helps develop social and language skills, as well as “theory of mind” – the ability to recognise our own and that of others emotional states. This type of play typically emerges around 18 months of age and reaches its peak between four and seven years of age.

in case you were still in any doubt about the deficit perspectives designed into what Ofsted think about working-class families, then this report includes the following line:
"For children with fewer opportunities and experiences in their home lives, there is little to tell"

We’ve published a new report looking at how schools support children to develop the knowledge and skills they need by the end of key stage 1.
The report sets out some recommendations for schools to ensure all children build this foundational knowledge: ow.ly/ot9a50TGuIo
