🚨 Tundu Lissu and the Fight for Tanzania’s Democracy The treason case against Mr. @TunduALissu has become much bigger than one politician or one courtroom. It has become a serious test of Tanzania’s democracy, the independence of its institutions and the country’s willingness to tolerate a strong and genuinely independent opposition. Mr. Lissu, the national chairman of CHADEMA, has spent more than a year in custody facing a treason charge arising from remarks he made during the political mobilisation surrounding the 2025 general election. The prosecution presented 17 witnesses before closing its case, while the defence has consistently challenged the interpretation of Lissu’s words and the evidence presented against him. The High Court ruled in August that he had a case to answer, and after the final submissions the court scheduled judgment for November 6, 2026. A case to answer is not a conviction, and Lissu remains entitled to the full protection of due process and the presumption of innocence. What makes the case particularly troubling is the wider political environment in which it has unfolded. CCM has governed Tanganyika since independence in 1961 and has remained the dominant political force in Tanzania ever since. Today, the central question is whether that long political dominance can coexist with a genuinely competitive multiparty democracy. Supporters of CHADEMA regard Tundu Lissu and Deputy Chairman @HecheJohn as leading figures in the country’s most serious opposition movement, while arguing that many of the other parties have failed to provide a credible challenge to CCM. Whatever one’s political position, a functioning democracy cannot be judged simply by the number of parties on a ballot. Opposition parties must be free to organise, criticise the government, mobilise citizens and compete for power without the constant fear that political activity will be turned into a criminal offence. The most important issue in the Lissu case is therefore whether the prosecution has actually established the legal elements of treason beyond reasonable doubt. The state has a legitimate responsibility to protect national security and public order, but those responsibilities cannot become a licence to criminalise political dissent. The prosecution maintains that Lissu’s words and actions amounted to an attempt to incite the public against the government and interfere with the electoral process. Mr. Lissu and his supporters reject that interpretation and argue that the case is fundamentally political. Our monitoring of the proceedings has raised serious questions about whether the evidence presented by the prosecution truly establishes treason rather than political speech and mobilisation. Those questions should be answered by evidence and law, not political pressure, public speculation or predetermined conclusions. The significance of this case extends far beyond Lissu himself. If an opposition leader can be removed from the political arena through a treason prosecution arising from political speech, the consequences will be felt by every politician, journalist, activist and ordinary citizen who wishes to challenge those in power. This is why the proceedings deserve sustained international attention. International observers, human-rights organisations, legal experts and democratic institutions should follow the case closely, not to dictate the outcome to Tanzanian courts, but to ensure that due process, judicial independence, political freedoms and the rule of law are respected. Tanzania’s reputation as a stable country should be measured not only by the absence of conflict, but also by the strength and independence of its democratic institutions.

Wow anxiously waiting for the big news...
Tanzania’s Tundu Lissu should win the Sakharov Prize By nominating Tundu Lissu for the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 2026, the EPP Group sends a message of support for democracy and the rule of law in Tanzania. Facing a death sentence after an unfair trial and persecution, the Tanzanian opposition leader remains a courageous symbol of the fight for democracy, human rights and the rule of law. "Tundu Lissu has been in detention for more than 500 days because he advocates for free and fair elections and a democratic future for his country. He continues to face the death penalty. There is no doubt about the political nature of his detention. Despite persecution and repression, Tundu Lissu remains steadfast in his democratic convictions. By nominating him, the EPP Group honours this extraordinary courage. The European Union must no longer tolerate the criminalisation of legitimate opposition work or the manipulation of the judiciary in Tanzania," says @davidmcallister MEP, Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs. "The struggle of Tundu Lissu highlights the critical erosion of democratic pluralism and constitutional rights in Tanzania. This nomination reinforces the EPP Group’s solidarity with democratic defenders worldwide. We must ensure that the rule of law is used to protect political freedom, in Tanzania and throughout the world," insists @ReinholdLopatka MEP, who nominated Tundu Lissu for the Prize on behalf of the EPP Group. "Given the strong partnership Europe has with Tanzania, we cannot and will not look away when political persecution, such as that faced by Tundu Lissu, takes place. We will highlight this unacceptable behaviour with his nomination for the Sakharov Prize," states @lukasmandl MEP, chairing the EPP Group in the Development Committee. The Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament will choose the laureate from among three shortlisted names on 22 October.

Tanzania has no moral authority to lecture the world on human rights while questions over the killing of its own citizens remain unanswered. You cant demand justice for Palestinians in New York and dodge accountability at home. Human rights are universal, not a #UNGA costume.

URGENT: COMMONWEALTH CMAG 🚨 Tanzania’s situation is not improving. As CMAG prepares to discuss Tanzania on September 20, 2026, Commonwealth representatives must hear the reality from Tanzanians-not only official government narratives. Tundu Lissu remains in prison despite the Commonwealth’s 30-day call to resolve his detention. That deadline has now passed. Enforced disappearances and abductions continue to raise serious concerns. Families are still searching for answers about loved ones who disappeared. The October 29, 2025 killings cannot simply be forgotten. Families are still waiting to know what happened to their loved ones, where they were buried, and who will be held accountable. A commission of inquiry cannot be the end of the process. Tanzania needs independent, credible investigations, truth, justice and accountability. We also need clarity concerning former Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi. He resigned, was subsequently expelled from CCM, and Tanzanians deserve transparency about what happened, why, and where he is now. Meanwhile, dissent continues to be suppressed. Activists, journalists and critics continue to face intimidation and restrictions. Reconciliation cannot simply mean moving forward without truth. Tanzania needs: TRUTH. ACTION. ACCOUNTABILITY. We need Tundu Lissu FREE. We need answers for the disappeared. We need families to know the fate and burial places of their loved ones. We need independent investigations into the October 29 violence and subsequent abuses. We need protection for peaceful political expression and human-rights defenders. And we need the Commonwealth to act when its own commitments and deadlines are not fulfilled. The Commonwealth has already spoken. The 30-day benchmark has passed. WHAT ACTION WILL THE COMMONWEALTH TAKE? Tanzanians are watching. Families are waiting. The world is watching. @SGCommonwealth @commonwealthsec @bwgov @anitaanandmp @mofagrenada @MalaysiaMFA @chrisfearne @ForeignAffairs @samoagov @ZAMBIAMFAIC @Europarl_EN @EuroParlPress @EPPGroup @idualliance @hrw @Amnesty @amnestyEARO @UNHumanRights @davidmcallister #Tanzania #CMAG #HumanRights #RuleOfLaw #FreeLissu #Accountability #Commonwealth #SakharovPrize #Tanzania #CMAG #HumanRights #RuleOfLaw #FreeLissu #Accountability #Commonwealth
