You know I love that she is doing qualitative research… and I also love these findings. Education on prevention (PrevEd) is essential, and beneficial for students, teachers and educational institutions. Not doing so is costly (personal; healthcare; institutional).

Watching rockstar @DrNadiaAzar @DRUMMERLaboffi1, who does research with rock stars! 🤩 Their research has found that education on preventing injuries decreased playing-related MSDs in drummers. #PAMA2023

🧵 @JessFlammia, a graduate student at @UWindsor, is conducting a research project under the mentorship of @DrNadiaAzar. The project aims to provide a descriptive analysis of the upper body kinematics of conductors.
Way to go, Jess!! 👏
🎵🎶 ICYMI, Master's student Jessica Flammia is studying the movements of orchestra conductors, including Windsor Symphony Orchestra maestro Robert Franz.

Repost from @drnadiaazar 💪🏾🙏🏾
・・・
It’s true that most of the #DRUMMERLab’s study participants have been rock/metal drummers, but every now and then we’ve had the opportunity to collect data on some pop drummers, starting with Brian Frazier-Moore while he was on tour with Justin Timberlake! When the tour ended, Brian posted some tour stats on his socials:
“SuperBowl 52. 3 Legs. 115 shows. 88 in North America. 27 in Europe. 6 cancelled shows. 14 band members. 6 dancers. All the crew.”
We extrapolated his data from one show to add another stat to his list: Over 132,000 total calories burned!
Check out the video for more of Brian’s energy expenditure stats and to see him in action during a show.

🎶Conductors are an integral part of many musical ensembles, and their movement patterns have been shown to be very repetitive and rely heavily on non-neutral postures in the upper limbs. 🎵

ALT This image is a brief description of my thesis project titled "A descriptive analysis of the upper body movement patterns of conductors." It includes photos of the motion capture system used and shares that data (joint angles) were collected using a portable motion-capture system bringing the science right into the participants' regular rehearsal space. It also includes two graphs displaying the large amount of repetition and time spent in non-neutral postures.
