Before Bond, there was Eric Ambler. Ian Fleming was a great admirer of Ambler’s work, and The Mask of Dimitrios makes a strong case as to why. Its examination of ordinary people caught up in extraordinary events and criminal networks helped shape the modern espionage thriller. Reading it, you can spot some of the DNA that would later find its way into Fleming’s own novels. #TheJamesBondBookClub #SpyFiction #EricAmbler
