PHP CVE patch tip: Forge's Ubuntu PPAs don't have the fix yet. My newest Forge server (26.04) uses packages.sury.org and patched with a plain apt upgrade. I pointed my 22.04 and 24.04 servers at packages.sury.org too and they're now on 8.2.35 and 8.4.27 🎉

PHP isn’t the most sexy language, I give you that. Where I live in Belgium, government, school, hospital, help line, media, news, and what not websites are down. It’s not because we don’t often hear about it that it isn’t big. Usually, PHP simply does the job. Nothing sexy, nothing worth shouting about. Only on these rare occasions do you get a feeling of the true impact of the language.

PHP sites behind Cloudflare already have an initial set of WAF rules deployed for the known exploit vectors in these vulnerabilities. The rules are available to all customers, including free. We are seeing early attacks emerging and are updating mitigations as new vectors show up. This is a STOPGAP only. Patch as soon as @ThePHPF releases the update at 14:00 UTC today.
The PHP security team is giving advance notice: Upcoming security release Wed, Oct 21st 2026, 14:00UTC, two critical vulnerabilities, both rated CVSSv4 9.2. PHP users are encouraged to prepare to update. Earlier release if details become public or active exploit evidence.

Let's talk a little more about Margaret Hamilton because she deserves it In 1961, Margaret Hamilton was tackling massive systems, having previously wrangled room-sized computers that blared like a foghorn whenever they crashed. Her fix wasn’t just to patch the bug. Everytime there was a crash, she took a Polaroid of the programmer who wrote it, and a note on the mistake. That way, if it ever happened again, they wouldn't be starting from scratch. They could note patterns and the last person who triaged that failure could help. This is a critical aspect of what she gave us. She didn’t stop at fixing errors. She studied their patterns so she could see them coming. She called them “the enemy,” and she meant it. Initially, when she was working on failure modes, higher-ups were errors wouldn't happen she actually named her program “Forget It.” But failures did happen. And her mindset, and discipline sent men to the Moon. Her Apollo software was built to expect the unexpected, and on Apollo 11 it recognized an overload mid-landing and kept the critical tasks running. Every postmortem, every bug tracker, every “let’s make sure this never happens again” carries a little of her in it. Thank you, and rest in peace, Margaret Hamilton 🚀

Even with all the advancements in AI, and everyone being able to “ship” faster, I still think you can always tell the difference between something that’s been rushed and something that’s had real time, thought and craft put into it.

PHP 8.6.0 RC2 can now be installed from Laravel Herd! It includes all PHP extensions (imagick, redis, sqlsrv, etc.) so you can make sure your apps are ready, when 8.6 releases on November 19 - so you have more time to play GTA 6 on launch day 😁 herd.laravel.com

I'm so grateful for this sponsorship 🥹. Times are tough, and we lost a few sponsors lately, which made me worried about how we can keep pushing forward. And then @brendt_gd and @jetbrains stepped in, and I can breathe a little better. Thank you ♥️
A huge thank you to @jetbrains for supporting us! ❤️ It means a lot to have companies like JetBrains back up what we are doing. So much of what we do wouldn’t be possible without the support of our sponsors. Thank you and welcome on board 🎉.

I'll take a "fan" over an "it works" any day. The fans brought the passion. The fans are what made it great. xitter.cf/adamwathan/status/2102…

I don’t think frameworks will have “fan bases” anymore, certainly nothing like it used to be. I think that whole thing is dead.

We improved all of our expose.dev servers to include botnet detection and blocking at the edge, so your shared sites will not be hit by bots trying to access wp-admin, .env, etc 🫡
