Today marks the success of a 12 year campaign as Iraq enters a new phase of security cooperation. See how the Global Coalition's military mission ended Daesh's territorial control in Syria and Iraq, liberating over 7 million people.

Wild story & development, but still awaiting more details. British woman #SharmeenaBegum who 'recruited #ShamimaBegum' has seemingly been found alive in #Syria & arrested. She's thought to have been dead since before the collapse of ISIS' state in 2019 /1 aol.co.uk/articles/british-i…

New on my Substack: Continuing with a series looking at Al-Shabaab's old Swahili-language magazine for women, Al-Ghurabaa, I look at how the group used the cases of Aafia Siddiqui and Samantha Lewthwaite to galvanize other women into jihad. calebweiss7.substack.com/p/j…

1/ In its latest al-Naba editorial, IS once again compares itself to the prophets: both in having a duty to spread "the true" message of Islam and in enduring the lonely, harsh path that supposedly follows. The message: hardship is not evidence of failure, but a test.

IS/ISIS has released its first official nashid (jihadist chant) in several years. Titled "Our Army Is Coming with Revenge", it was produced by Ajnad, IS's dedicated nashid-production outlet and one of its earliest official media arms, established in 2013. The nashid is dominated by threatening lyrics about IS "armies" and "soldiers" coming to exact revenge. The last known Ajnad nashid appears to have been released in 2018 (although I could be wrong and there were subsequent releases).

Latest at my Substack: A look back at when al-Shabaab's East African networks - linked to Ahmad Iman Ali - made a Swahili-language call for women to join its ranks in Somalia in 2014. Another reminder of how jihad is not just an activity for men. calebweiss7.substack.com/p/j…

Delighted to see my paper "The Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Those Affiliated with Terrorism: The Case of #Iraq" now published in Terrorism and Political Violence. Based on fieldwork and interviews with ISIS-affiliated families in the country it argues that: /1

Specifically: 1) Press for repatriation of detainees with “insufficient” IS links. 2) Pursue multilateral engagement on trials. 3) Leverage U.S. relationships with Damascus and Baghdad to strengthen cooperation. 4) Establish a sustainable framework for the remaining detainees.

“In the aftermath of 9/11, policy attention focused intensely on safe havens and alternatively governed spaces, with an emphasis on al-Qaeda and its branches in places like Afghanistan, Yemen, and Somalia," wrote @azelin and @DevorahMargolin in a 2024 report. "Over the past two decades, the challenge has become much broader and more complicated, encompassing jihadist governance, statecraft, and consolidation of power." washingtoninstitute.org/poli…

🧵My analysis for BBC Monitoring on 9/11 anniversary: monitoring.bbc.co.uk/product… 1/ Twenty-five years after 9/11, has global jihadism failed? There's a strong case it has, at least as a political project. Neither al-Qaeda nor Islamic State (IS) - nor any other transnational jihadist group - has succeeded in taking control of an entire country. IS came closest, but ultimately lost its territorial “caliphate”. Yet two Islamist groups have succeeded in taking power: the Taliban in Afghanistan and, more strikingly, HTS in Syria. Neither followed the transnational model championed by al-Qaeda and IS.
