It is too hard for kids to get into college. And it's too hard for schools to tell students apart.
The problem is twofold: (1) grade inflation at the high school level combined with overly mechanical assessment; (2) a failure to expand slots at competitive/elite institutions.

For what it is worth, I am generally in favor using standardized tests like the SAT for college admissions - we should have universal testing. I also think predictive validity and college performance alone are not what an universities ought to value or optimize.

I'm excited to share a new resource. The CPIM dashboard provides an interactive overview of Canadian population, immigration, labour market, and housing market trends based on publicly available data:

The purpose of the dashboard is to make key trends easier to access, compare, and interpret. By presenting these data in one place, the dashboard supports discussions on the relationships between immigration, labour market dynamics, and housing market conditions in Canada

Excited to see this finally coming out in the October issue! It was a lot of fun working on this with @_CarlMcPherson, @dsosinskiy, and @Michael96718027.
The upshot: Large min wage increases through $15 led to substantial pay growth and no disemployment

As university budgets come under strain, policymakers have often turned to nonresident tuition as a lever to raise revenue. My new paper uses a lottery to show that for every $1 by which nonres tuition rose, uni profit rose $0.08, and the PDV of state tax revenue FELL by $2.53.

This is a link to a summary of what we know from research about student loans
Student loans can help students pay for college, but their effects depend on how and why students borrow.
In a new chapter, Jeffrey T. Denning examines student loans, borrowing, student debt, college prices, and income-driven repayment.

Who out here can point us to strong evidence about the returns to second-language education? I have a general sense it has broad positive spillovers beyond language acquisition itself.
