5/ We separated them into 8 single-barreled items. Taking the higher rating from each pair closely reproduced standard PHQ scores & screening classifications. 1-barreled items showed more symptom-specific associations w external criterion measures & distinct endorsement patterns.

3/ Because they had completed the PHQ prior to these Qs, we asked them how they had filled it out: based on the frequency of the Sx or based on the frequency with which they were bothered by the Sx (or a mix of both). Again, high variability, and few people focusing on 'bothered'

2/ We gave the hypothetical: "Imagine you overslept every day for 2 weeks but it didn't bother you" and asked would you select 0 "Not at All" or 3 "Nearly Every Day". Unfortunately, people with the same experience (oversleeping) said they would respond very differently to the PHQ
