New paper out: we show that microbial short-chain fatty acids improve neuroplasticity and functional recovery after stroke. Effect is mediated by brain-invading T cells on microglia.

Today is #WorldStrokeDay !
Stroke is the second leading cause of death. 1 of 4 of us will have a stroke!
Besides better prevention, we must increase our efforts for a better mechanistic understanding of this disease and develop novel therapies @ISD_Research

Thanks to everyone @Neuro_Bordeaux for an amazing #CajalCourse! I was lucky to have my very first experience as an instructor with such a brilliant team of students with unlimited energy (even after 8 pm, even after dinner!). I miss our late-evening discussions and all the jokes

Useful tool to control glia.
Just published: the light-activated protein melanopsin provides a tool for optogenetically controlling glial cells, which make up perhaps half of the cells of the brain. Such tools could help probe how glia contribute to processes like memory formation. rdcu.be/bgAnX

Our skull might be more than a physical barrier for the brain:
We found short vascular connections between skull marrow and brain surface which might carry cells and molecules into pathological brain. See our recent work for more info: nature.com/articles/s41593-0…
