I don't have anything to say about those guidelines from a top university about preferred language, BUT it does remind me of one time when I was working with some UK colleagues and we were discussing large typographical dot characters, such as •.
It occurred to me toward the end of the conversation that they kept calling them "dots" but I kept calling them "bullets."
My housemate asked, very genuinely, “Why do they call [New Jersey] the Garden State?” and I tried to say “Because-Oil-And-Petrochemical-Refinery-State-wouldn’t-fit-on-a-license-plate” so fast I almost sprained something
