I have slav fatigue.
#Metro2039 will not feature Russian language support. You can forget about subtitles altogether.
The game is already available for pre-order at $70, with the Deluxe Edition priced at $100. Steam page: store.steampowered.com/app/2…
Plus, the lion's share of the time spent directly copying chunks of code from the Quake 2 engine. But we're not talking about that
When I was writing Unreal Engine 1, my time was divided as follows:
- Around 30% went to seriously deep coding on hard problems: assembly language texture mappers, C++ BSP trees, data persistence, object oriented systems design, and networking.
- Around 70% was just typing and refactoring large bodies of code needed for a complete engine feature set. This was not hard, and while I was doing it my mind was mostly on the deeper coding topics, thinking and planning for what's next. It didn't feel much different from vibe coding today, except that it was just me typing code on an IBM Model M keyboard rather than prompting it and reviewing the results.
So, it has always seemed perfectly logical that we would rely on AI for that 70%, once the AI could do it with a similar quality standard as we could, which has never been perfection. It came as no surprise that, after a few years of AI model evolution, it was able to take the reigns on that 70% and free up programmers' time for more valuable tasks.
What's more of a surprise is the emergence of AI as a sort of insta-Carmack able to solve hard technical problems quite cleverly and often cleanly, and that it's able to reason about and work in complex 3D scenes both by operating the tools and by directly understanding the raw data files.
I abandoned assembly language in 1998 when out-of-order CPUs made much simpler C/C++ code faster, and never I missed it. If prompting through architectural documents, concept art, and design plans can transcend typing code and tweaking vertices, that will enable developers to spend their time on higher-level, higher value technical and creative tasks.
What matters is the end product, whether it's a game or an engine. Anything developers can do to try out more ideas and make better software and games faster is a win for everyone.

That demo involved a non trivial chance of embarrassing failure! 🫡
I’m only going for the baseline model. At this point in my life, rocket bunny hops are out of my comfort zone.

I had a similar reaction. Everyone should applaud performance improvements, but gauge against the “speed of light”, not just a sloppy competitor. If you are measuring in seconds, you may have already anchored yourself incorrectly.
Structure the UI so you can put locally cached media up just a few vblanks after the process launches.
Structure the server so it can return everything necessary for the dynamic UI in one single query that was kicked off in parallel with the Gfx API initialization, branching to a modern transport protocol for large media files.
You should be able to double click on the launcher and have it responsive before your muscle memory can slam the pointer to a location to click on.
This is hilarious and awesome.
Awesome because this has annoyed millions of peoples for years.
Hilarious because WHY DOES IT TAKE 5 SECONDS TO SHOW A MENU OF GAMES?!
Steam takes 10 SECONDS?!
Do you realize how much time that is for a CPU with a modern internet connection? Am I crazy!? What am I missing?

A new data breach involving Double Counter has exposed information connected to Discord users affecting around 275,000 unique email addresses.
According to Have I Been Pwned, the exposed data includes:
-Email addresses
-Discord usernames
-Names
-Geographic information
-Country and postcode for some paying subscribers
The breach was linked to a vulnerability in Metabase, the analytics platform used by Double Counter.
If you’ve used Double Counter on Discord, check whether your email was affected and stay alert for phishing attempts or suspicious Discord messages.

Call of Duty has been leading the pack on low quality content with the integration of generative AI feeding you content straight from the prompt.
They are the trend setters, your future games will be influenced by their success.
"You vote with your wallet" is a phrase I say alot and I mean this more than ever.
Do NOT spend money on this game.
I know its Doom, I know its awesome but its in poor taste and so disrespectful.
