Veteran actor Nana Patekar has passed away. The Hindi film industry and Mumbai share an inseparable bond. When one speaks of Mumbai, it encompasses its theatre, its world of commercial cinema, and the middle and lower-middle classes striving daily to carve out their identity, from slums to chawls. Then came the working class that gradually faced ruin in this city and across the country; the rise of the underworld born out of that social despair; the period where communal harmony unraveled before our eyes; followed by the post-liberalization expansion of middle-class aspirations and the politics swirling around it all. Through every such era, Nana Patekar made his presence felt, sometimes on stage, sometimes on screen. From ‘Hamidabai Chi Kothi’ to ‘Parinda’, ‘Krantiveer’, ‘Ab Tak Chhappan’, and all the way to ‘Natasamrat’, Nana remained ever-present. Across each phase, he brought to life, whether on the screen or the stage, the common man living with persistent inner turmoil. Anger, humiliation, powerlessness, despair, revulsion toward immorality, disillusionment with the system, and class struggle constantly simmer within the mind of the common man. It spills over only occasionally through petty arguments or domestic turmoil. Otherwise, it stays bottled up inside. Watching Nana perform felt like looking into this emotional pressure cooker of ordinary lives. When Nana, or the 'Angry Young Man' Amitabh Bachchan, confronted these realities on screen, they vented the steam trapped within the human psyche. As I often say, just as singers and composers like Lata didi, Asha tai, Kishore Kumar, and Rafi sahab, along with filmmakers, playwrights, directors, and artists, entertained Indian minds for at least 60 to 70 years, figures like Nana and Bachchan Sahab powerfully released that inner steam on screen. Had they not done so, chaos might have erupted in this country every month. Watching Nana act always reminded me of Hollywood's Morgan Freeman. Neither fit the conventional type of Bollywood or Hollywood actors of their times in terms of looks or persona. Watching Morgan Freeman, one often feels this is a man who has absorbed wisdom, patience, and a quiet acceptance of things as they are over time. With Nana's acting, however, I sensed fury, restlessness, and a deeply entrenched despair. Freeman represents a man who seems to have seen it all; Nana represents a man who has endured too much and can take no more. These are two opposite ends of the human spectrum. Because Nana could bring that second extreme to the screen with raw authenticity, he was a truly great artist. In the 2000s, polished, fair, and conventional leading men began making way for story-driven cinema, ushering in an era of character actors who could carry a narrative and draw audiences on merit. Nana was undoubtedly the pioneer of this era. The prominence that character actors enjoy today was paved by Nana. Yet, despite all this, he was fiercely individualistic, spoke his mind without filter, and was outspoken (though it hardly suits me to call anyone outspoken; be that as it may). Because of this, even when producers and directors wished to cast him, they often hesitated. Did this hurt Nana? One cannot say; he remained indifferent. But it certainly deprived Hindi cinema and its audience. While Nawazuddin Siddiqui and the late Irrfan Khan were undoubtedly brilliant performers, one wonders whether they and others like them would have found those same opportunities had Nana been willing to compromise. Moreover, Nana was not confined to aggressive or intense roles, through films like ‘Welcome’, he demonstrated to the world that he could handle comedy with equal prowess.

Sorry to interrupt your Sunday, friends. I really hesitated to write this, but if I don’t speak up today, I will be facing a severe financial crisis within a week or two. To be clear, I am not asking for charity or financial help. I am asking for work. I have been completely without work for the last three months. My last project ended on June 30th, and since then I have knocked on every door I know—calling, texting, meeting contacts, and following up. People say they will try, but after that first talk, the silence takes over. Calls go unanswered or get cut after a couple of rings. I honestly don't know whether the industry is shifting because of AI or if my age (52) is working against me, but despite over 13 years of solid experience in the field, nothing has materialized. Now, my savings are down to the very end. I can barely hold out for another week or two. I am a professional content writer, translator, and speaker who is comfortable on stage and in front of the camera. I write and translate fluently across Gujarati, Hindi, and English, with Gujarati being my strongest suit. Many of you already know my grasp of politics and my political writing, but I am equally adept at covering Bollywood and cricket. My priority is media houses, digital platforms, or publications, but I am open to any genuine writing or translation opportunity. I can work remotely or take up assignments on-site anywhere in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, as I need to be close to my elderly mother to take care of her health. Because my situation is urgent, I am especially looking for quick-turnaround freelance assignments or immediate projects where payments can be settled on submission. If you or anyone in your circle has work, please reach out to me directly in my DMs. A humble, earnest request: while I deeply value your warmth, please refrain from sending just "best wishes" or "stay strong" messages right now. I am fighting hard to stay out of a very dark headspace, and right now, only actual work leads can pull me through. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and thank you for your support. My inbox is open. 🙏

I don't know who else to tell this to, so I am going to tell my story here. Every day is a struggle for a young business, but the last few months have been harder than usual. We are a small Indian company. For more than ten years we have been building a homegrown brand in a product category dominated by big foreign players. There are almost no Indian names in this space. We set out to be one. We started in 2014. Over the years we began making parts in India instead of just importing, and we started selling in the US, Dubai, Nepal, Malaysia and South Africa. We showed up at global trade fairs to represent an Indian brand on the world stage. In 2023 we changed the import code we use for our product. We did not do this quietly. Every shipment was declared. Nothing was hidden. We didn't invent our approach. We followed written professional advice and the way this product is treated in markets around the world. And now we are facing a government demand running into tens of crores in duty recovery and penalties, plus personal penalties on the founders and even on an employee. For a company our size, this is not a fine we can pay and move on from. This ends us. We have not run from any of this. I am not built like that. It is not how I was raised. We have written to the authorities, met officials in person, and we have now filed a writ in the High Court. All we are asking for is a fair treatment. I set out to build in India and sell to the world. I am asking only that the system back honest founders trying to compete globally, instead of breaking them. The process is the process, and it exists for a reason. But process should not feel like punishment. From where I am standing today, it does. I am not giving up. I have worked too hard for this. If you have read this far, please share it. If you know someone who can help, point them my way. Help me get the word out.

From "System of Record" to "System of Intelligence" In the next decade, you want to own the system of intelligence that pulls from the system of record, becomes the user’s one-stop shop for gaining context and taking action, and turns the SoR into something that’s primarily consumed at the API layer. The reasoning layer that sits above the database is where a new generation of companies is being built, and it’s where the majority of the next decade’s enterprise value of GTM software will end up. So, it's been 7 days since we've been stuck in Doha. I wanted to share a few updates, since I have been getting a lot of calls/messages: 1. We have no relief flights from Doha to India yet. And, there's no visibility in the horizon either. 2. Indian Embassy of Qatar is mostly incommunicado. The phone lines are near-impossible to connect to. This is adding to the anxiety of many stranded Indian passengers here. @IndEmbDoha I know because we have a WA group to help share information. 3. Accommodation and food are still being provided. And, Qatar Airways has a 24hr help desk at our hotel. 4. Many folks have managed to exit out through Riyadh and Saudi Arabia with on-arrival VISAs (note that you need a stamped UK, US, or Schengen VISA for the same). We haven't done that yet because one of our colleagues doesn't have that option. 5. Thankfully, the embassy @IndEmbDoha has offered to facilitate VISAs for the same but with the caveat that they need 48 hours to respond. I believe -- considering the emergency -- it should be handled faster. Also, the form requires us to share onward flight ticket from any Saudi AIRPORT. What date should we book it for, if we have no clarity on how long it will take for us to get a VISA? Truth be told, I started off calm and composed, despite the loud blasts, and the sirens. But now, the anxiety and frustration is setting in. It is further exasperated by the fact that many folks have been able to get out of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. @DrSJaishankar @MEAIndia if you could help all the stranded passengers here and help us in anyway possible, that would be great.

People ask me all the time about compelling use cases of AI. Here’s a good one. Millions of dogs go missing in the U.S. every year—and options for finding them are often painfully limited. Our Ring team saw an opportunity to use our community and technology to help, so they built Search Party. When a pet owner posts about a lost dog in the Ring app, nearby participating outdoor Ring cameras in the neighborhood begin looking for potential matches. If yours spots what might be the missing dog, it lets you know. You see the photo alongside footage from your camera, then can choose to share the video with the pet’s owner. The AI is trained on tens of thousands of dog videos so it can recognize different breeds, sizes, fur patterns, body features, unique marks, shape, and color. And privacy stays in your control—you decide each time whether to help. The impact is energizing. Search Party has helped bring home 99 dogs in just 90 days—more than a dog a day since launching three months ago. Ring customer Kylee was blown away by Search Party after her dog Nyx was found by a neighbor’s camera just 15 minutes after slipping through a tiny hole he’d dug under her backyard fence. When a Ring customer and military veteran named Kurt realized his service dog was missing after jumping his fence, he worried he might have lost her for good. He quickly initiated a Search Party in the Ring app asking neighbors to help locate her. Later that day, he got the notification he was hoping for…Lainey was found. Chris, a Ring camera owner, helped reunite another lost dog with its family after getting an app alert that said, “Your camera may have spotted a missing dog,” flagging footage he wouldn't have otherwise noticed. And the list of stories like these keeps growing. Now we’ve expanded this feature so that anyone in the U.S. can start a Search Party through the Ring app, even without a Ring camera (lost pets are one of the most common posts in the Ring Neighbors app—over 1M last year alone). With roughly 90 million dogs in the U.S., think this is gonna matter for a lot of families. Good example of real-world impact, and proud of what the Ring team has built here. aboutamazon.com/news/devices…

Last quarter I rolled out Microsoft Copilot to 4,000 employees. $30 per seat per month. $1.4 million annually. I called it "digital transformation." The board loved that phrase. They approved it in eleven minutes. No one asked what it would actually do. Including me. I told everyone it would "10x productivity." That's not a real number. But it sounds like one. HR asked how we'd measure the 10x. I said we'd "leverage analytics dashboards." They stopped asking. Three months later I checked the usage reports. 47 people had opened it. 12 had used it more than once. One of them was me. I used it to summarize an email I could have read in 30 seconds. It took 45 seconds. Plus the time it took to fix the hallucinations. But I called it a "pilot success." Success means the pilot didn't visibly fail. The CFO asked about ROI. I showed him a graph. The graph went up and to the right. It measured "AI enablement." I made that metric up. He nodded approvingly. We're "AI-enabled" now. I don't know what that means. But it's in our investor deck. A senior developer asked why we didn't use Claude or ChatGPT. I said we needed "enterprise-grade security." He asked what that meant. I said "compliance." He asked which compliance. I said "all of them." He looked skeptical. I scheduled him for a "career development conversation." He stopped asking questions. Microsoft sent a case study team. They wanted to feature us as a success story. I told them we "saved 40,000 hours." I calculated that number by multiplying employees by a number I made up. They didn't verify it. They never do. Now we're on Microsoft's website. "Global enterprise achieves 40,000 hours of productivity gains with Copilot." The CEO shared it on LinkedIn. He got 3,000 likes. He's never used Copilot. None of the executives have. We have an exemption. "Strategic focus requires minimal digital distraction." I wrote that policy. The licenses renew next month. I'm requesting an expansion. 5,000 more seats. We haven't used the first 4,000. But this time we'll "drive adoption." Adoption means mandatory training. Training means a 45-minute webinar no one watches. But completion will be tracked. Completion is a metric. Metrics go in dashboards. Dashboards go in board presentations. Board presentations get me promoted. I'll be SVP by Q3. I still don't know what Copilot does. But I know what it's for. It's for showing we're "investing in AI." Investment means spending. Spending means commitment. Commitment means we're serious about the future. The future is whatever I say it is. As long as the graph goes up and to the right.

Client walks in. 68 years old. $2.8M net worth. House is paid off. Worth $950K. She's living on $38K a year from Social Security. Tell me how that makes sense. She brings coupons to restaurants. Buys the cheapest everything. "I'm not taking money from my retirement accounts. I need that for emergencies." What emergency costs $2.8M? You're denying yourself basic comforts at 68. You haven't visited your grandkids in Phoenix in 2 years. Your emergency fund has an emergency fund. She fought me for 8 months. "My parents taught me never to touch principal." Your parents also retired with a pension and died at 74. We finally got her to take distributions last year. $120K annually from her portfolio. Still only a 4.3% withdrawal rate. Now she's flying to Phoenix quarterly. Took her grandkids to Disney. And stopped agonizing over every $12 purchase. She spent 3 years being miserable with $2.8M in the bank. You don't get a prize for dying with the most money.

agree with lots of what jensen has been saying about ai and jobs; there is a ton of stuff to do in the world. people will 1) do a lot more than they could do before; ability and expectation will both go up 2) still care very much about other people and what they do 3) still be very driven by creating and being useful to others for sure jobs will be very different, and maybe the jobs of the future will look like playing games to us today while still being very meaningful to those people of the future. (people of the past might say that about us.) betting against human's ability to want more stuff, find new ways to play status games, ability to find new methods for creative expression, etc is always a bad bet. maybe human money and machine money will be totally different things, who knows, but we have a LOT of main character energy. more to come.
