We support SA for ITU Council! @CommsZA @ITU Africa's digital future must include Deaf communities. Digital migration from analog to digital = chance to mandate captions & SASL on all TV. Make accessibility an ITU priority! #VoteSouthAfrica #DeafInclusion @ICASA_org

19 July – National South African Sign Language Day
On 19 July 2023, history was made when President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Eighteenth Constitutional Amendment Act, officially recognising South African Sign Language (SASL) as South Africa's 12th official language.
Today, we remember this historic milestone and honour the generations of Deaf people who fought tirelessly for equal recognition of their language. DeafSA was proud to play a leading role in this journey, advocating for the constitutional recognition of South African Sign Language.

@ICASA_org Thank you for PEB allocation update for #LGE2026 📺
As you roll out PEB slots, kindly remind broadcasters & parties: PEBs must include South African Sign Language Interpreter + Open Captions/Subtitles - per Constitution Sec 9, CRPD Article 21 & ICASA Code.
4M Deaf & hard-of-hearing SA citizens must access manifestos too! 🇿🇦🤟🏾 #DeafVotesMatter #SASL12th #Accessibility #LGE2026 @DeafsaInfo @newhoudt

@FPB_ZA Great work on age classification and child protection! Please also consider accessibility in your classification standards. We urge you to look into mandatory requirements for quality open captions/subtitles and a dedicated SASL interpreter window, so that Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing viewers can equally benefit and know what they are watching. Classification must mean inclusion too. #DeafAccess #InclusiveMedia #SASL #Onlinesafety #KnowTheRating @DeafsaInfo

What does digital inclusion look like?
It means being able to learn, connect, access services and participate, regardless of who you are.
DCDT’s Cyber Labs and affordable-device initiatives are helping reduce barriers to digital access for Deaf South Africans.
