Sometimes progress is easier than we think — if we use amazing #policy tools already available to us. Proud to present my proposal for how @NIST can quarterback Federal #innovation for the #bioindustry we deserve. 🙏 to @Day1Project and @FAScientists for support and sharing!
Rapid progress in strengthening American bioindustry is possible, but it demands a coordinated and concerted effort that taps the federal government’s unique combination of scale and highly effective lab-to-market incentive mechanisms. dayoneproject.org/ideas/acce…

To start out, let it be said that Congress needs to provide sustained funding for federal R&D programs, including those authorized in CHIPS and Science. Many agencies fared reasonably well in the FY 2023 omnibus, but still were quite short of CHIPS targets - especially NSF.

Congress has lately worked with agencies to foster novel research institutions. Here are ideas for more. First, from Arika Virapongse, a course of action for NSF to support independent scholars through funding, partnerships, and professional development. dayoneproject.org/ideas/broa…

Check out the full menu of ideas here: fas.org/pub-reports/118th-co… It's up to agencies to implement many of these ideas, but Congress can help guide the way through legislation, funding, and leadership.
