MPP for Northumberland - Peterborough South & Minister of Infrastructure for Ontario

from Port Hope, ON
Joined September 2014
At 65, Ruben is proving that it’s never too late to learn new skills and pursue new opportunities. After finding himself out of work, he decided to head back to the classroom. With help from PLACA, he enrolled in their Pathways to Prosperity program, a training initiative supported by Ontario’s Skills Development Fund. Today, he’s working as a labourer, with his sights set on becoming a supervisor. And he’s not stopping there, instead he’s already looking to expand his skill set through additional training in HVAC. It was a pleasure meeting Ruben at his graduation and hearing how opportunities like these are helping workers gain new skills, overcome barriers to employment, and build brighter futures for themselves and their families. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for a fresh start, we’re making sure people of all ages have the tools and training they need to succeed. After all, you are never too old or too young to help build Ontario.

As President Trump’s tariffs continue to threaten Canadian jobs, Ontario is investing in our greatest asset: our workers. With $41 million to train more apprentices and a $2.5 billion commitment through the Skills Development Fund, we’re preparing the next generation of skilled workers to build the roads, hospitals, schools and other critical infrastructure that our growing communities need.

Some of the most important infrastructure work happens beneath our feet!   DYK: Work is moving ahead on the Victoria Street South reconstruction in Port Hope. Funding through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program (MHIP), is helping Port Hope upgrade the road, sidewalks and transportation connections, and replace the aging water, sewer and stormwater infrastructure that local families rely on every day.   It may not always be the infrastructure you notice, but it’s the kind of work that keeps streets safer, more reliable and better equipped to serve the community for decades to come. @porthopeontario

Ontario has the resources, workers and expertise needed to become a global energy superpower. Now, we’re building the infrastructure to make it happen. From new nuclear to battery storage and transmission networks, we’re securing our energy future, creating more good-paying jobs and building a more self-sufficient province. @fordnation @Sflecce

Long weekends mean more people on the move. Here in Port Hope, we’re replacing the Ganaraska River Bridge to help Highway 401 keep pace with growing demand and make everyday trips safer and more reliable. Wherever you’re headed this weekend, travel safe and enjoy some well-earned time with the people who matter most.

Protecting Ontario means building the infrastructure that puts our workers, resources and industries at the centre of a stronger, more resilient economy. As President Trump’s economic attacks continue, we’re working with First Nations to accelerate the roads to the Ring of Fire. In turn, connecting communities, unlocking critical minerals and laying the foundation for generations of good-paying jobs. This is nation-building infrastructure that will help Ontario compete and build more here at home. @fordnation @GregRickford @PrabSarkaria @Sflecce

The infrastructure we build should make everyday life better. Whether that means getting people home faster, supporting economic growth or making sure Ontario is ready for what comes next.   That’s the approach I’m bringing to the infrastructure file: build faster, focus on the projects people rely on every day and make sure every investment delivers real value for our communities.   The bridge rehabilitation project on Rosedale Valley Road is an important part of that work. At it’s core, our infrastructure work is about people, like the Alonzi family who started the Bridgecon Construction in 1987. I recently had the chance to meet Frank and his son Daniel and wife Jennifer. They work closely alongside LiUNA Local 183 (@liuna183) who work in partnership with The Oaks Revitalization Association (@oaksrevitalization) who give justice affected and invoked people a second chance at a productive career. I met many of the workers who are building our future with their bare hands including Lewis who turned obstacle into opportunity and now has more than a job, he has a career and a rewarding future ahead of him. These are just some of the workers delivering this critical infrastructure.   This is what building a stronger, more connected Ontario is all about: stronger infrastructure, more opportunity and ensuring the people building Ontario share in its growth.

Our infrastructure investments should make everyday life easier. Our government is investing $31 billion in highways, roads and bridges, including replacing the Choate Road Overpass and Ganaraska River Bridge near Port Hope to improve safety, reduce congestion and ensure Highway 401 can accommodate growing demand. This is what building for a growing province looks like.

We’re investing more than $101 billion in health care this year to make sure people can get the care they need, when and where they need it. Here in Northumberland, our recent investment in Northumberland Hills Hospital is helping renew critical infrastructure and expand service offerings for patients in our community. @NorHillsHosp

We can’t build for Ontario’s future without investing in the people who will help deliver it.   Minister Quinn’s announcement Monday is an important part of that work. The $38 million investment will create more than 1,500 additional seats at Trent University, expanding opportunities for students in STEM, health, education and other in-demand sectors.   As we continue to build the critical infrastructure our growing province needs, investments like these are helping ensure that Ontario has the skilled people to plan, build and keep these projects moving. @nolanmquinn   Read more here: news.ontario.ca/en/release/1…

It was a pleasure to be at the @brightonapplefest opening ceremony last Saturday, celebrating one of our community’s great traditions. Applefest is about so much more than apples – it’s about celebrating out agricultural roots, local businesses like Saucy Dotty @saucydottys   A huge thank you to the Applefest Committee, Municipality of Brighton (@MunOfBrighton) staff, all the volunteers, local businesses, farmers, and everyone who helped make this year’s festival such a success.   IYDK: Saucy Dotty is a Brighton-based company built on a family recipe. Her sauce can be used as a dipping sauce, marinades, glaze and so much more. I even put it on my eggs!

Our government will always protect Ontario's workers and businesses.   We're expanding the Protect Ontario Financing Program to support sectors hit by the latest U.S. import ban, while continuing to back businesses still facing previous tariffs, including the steel and aluminum sectors, so workers can stay on the job.   Learn more: news.ontario.ca/en/release/1…
