What a fabulous farewell column from a fabulous person. We say our goodbyes tomorrow to Michelle, @gregcote and @FernandezAndreC , and I will miss not only their work but their company and good humor... Sadly, our business is dying. (Two more bad things happened today in our 3-newspaper sports section cocoon, but it's not my place to say.) The three hedge funds-or-chains that own the three S. Florida newspapers haven't been able to make enough revenue (in their view) with a paywall in a world where anyone can ask AI for a summary of an article. I'd like to see a no-paywall approach, but the hedge funds/chains know more than I do and say it won't work. There will be a day when none of us - myself and 11 others who remain sportswriters for The Herald, Sentinel and Palm Beach Post - will be around. And while some fans are fine getting their information solely from aggregators, I hope everyone realizes there will be very little to aggregate when all 12 of us are invariably gone.
