I think I have a crush on one of my characters... Can anyone guess which one? (In a parallel universe, where most of my followers have read my books, I get loads of guesses in the replies...🤣)

My receptionist, Emily, lost her husband unexpectedly in a car accident. Our company policy allows for 3 days of bereavement leave. On day 4, she showed up, pale and shaking, trying to answer phones because she couldn't afford to lose her income. It was heartbreaking to watch. I put the 'Out to Lunch' sign up, locked the door, and sat her down. I told her, 'Go home. Take the month. Take two. Your salary will continue as if you are here 8 hours a day.' Grief doesn't have a 3-day expiration date. If you force people to work through trauma, you break them. If you support them, they remember it forever.

It seems my editor has a phobia of 'but' and 'just'. Sure, sometimes they can be axed, but the have a place, right?

At the airport check-in desk, a young soldier was arguing with the agent. His duffel bag was overweight. "It's $75, sir," the agent said. "I can't waive it." The soldier looked panicked. "I haven't been paid yet. I’m deploying tomorrow. All my gear is in there." He started unzipping the bag, pulling out heavy boots and books, trying to figure out what to leave behind. A businessman in a tailored suit, who had been on his phone the whole time, walked up to the counter. He didn't say anything to the soldier. He just slid his platinum credit card to the agent. "Add his bag to my ticket," the businessman said. The soldier stopped. "Sir, I can't let you—" The businessman looked him in the eye. "You're going to a desert to get shot at for my freedom. The least I can do is pay for your bag. Now put your boots back in." He walked away before the soldier could say thank you. No fanfare. Just respect. Anonymous

"Today as I was heading to the gym [when] I passed a car with its hood up. In passing, I saw it was an older lady and she had this helpless look on her face. I backed up before entering the interstate and asked if she was okay. She could barely talk and seemed like she was about to cry, so I made her laugh. I said, 'Well, duh, obviously you're not okay. Your hood is up and you're sitting in the middle of the road.' She laughed and told me she had just bought a battery, but her car went dead at the light. I said, 'Ma'am it's your alternator.' She said, 'You must be a country boy!' I jumped her car and advised her to go straight home instead of doing the errands she was running. I followed her home and the car cut off again, but I jumped her again and we finally got her car parked back at her apartment complex. She tried to pay me. After saying how long she'd been sitting in the road -- helpless and unable to get anyone on the phone -- it reminded me of how different things are in this world today. I told her I grew up in a smaller city, but it was second nature for me to stop and make sure she was okay or had someone/AAA on the way. I told her my name and she told me hers was Fannie. I said, 'Ms. Fannie -- that was my grandmother's name. Maybe she is reminding me from heaven to be a gentleman.' In this busy and hectic world, take the time and be a blessing to someone." ~Credit: Maurice Johnson

I'm with that, 100%. I just keep seeing these posts that say things like "I will never read anything that has been touched by AI, or has an AI book cover or even one em dash!" I make my own book covers, but I can imagine writers who are writers without visual art skills.

To what extent do your own experiences shape your characters? Are they who you want to be? Maybe they're who you'd want to be with. Or maybe, you just made them up. 🤔 #writingcommunity

Sorry all for neglecting you. I've been on a bit of a downer of late. But I'm back thanks to the supportive community here and the characters in my head. "Tell our story!" they order. Who am I to argue? #writerslife

What words or phrases are you guilty of over-using in your writing? For me it's: "She/he told her/him" And "Really" #WritingCommunity

If your protagonist was sitting in a diner, what would they order? Mine would order two fried eggs and an orange.

Ebooks are great and all, but nothing beats holding your own printed books. These just arrived! I'm so happy with how they've turned out that I thought I'd share!
