One of the lessons the last three off-cycle elections have reinforced for me is that election monitoring should not start on election day.
Across these elections, we deployed Dataphyte’s election-monitoring infrastructure to follow different stages of the electoral process...

Osun election has shown how much the electorates want credible, free and fair elections. It also showed how demand side of electoral accountability combined human network and artificial intelligence (AI) to deliver real time information about the process, the incidence, and the results from the votes.
On the side of political actors, we continue to see how video, voice and visual contents are being generated using AI. There’s also the understanding that INEC will use the tool of AI to ensure effective delivery of a credible election come the general elections in 2027.
There are various opportunities for all sides of the table to use AI constructively or corrosively during the 2027 elections. Yet, the real question remains whether AI is the most important factor that will shape how the mandates of the people, INEC and political parties will be upheld.
There is also the question whether the digital system that AI rests on in Nigeria is robust enough to protect rights and interests of all parties as we get close to the elections.
How well prepared are the media, civil society, courts, lawmakers and the international observers for the elections? How much hype is given to AI? How much intentionality is given to past trends in the use of technology in our elections?
These issues and the opportunity for technologists and other stakeholders to get their hands dirty to build tools and learn from each other are packed into this event come 14-15 October, 2026.
@Dataphytefdn is proud to be a partner alongside @YIAGA, @CJIDAfrica, @inecnigeria and others to bring you this exciting event.
Stay tuned.

It can mean a health centre with essential medicines, functional equipment, skilled health workers and timely care when complications arise.

Happy International Day of Democracy...
On October 1, 1960, Nigeria gained independence and the right to determine its own future. But independence was only the beginning. The deeper work has been building a democracy where citizens can meaningfully shape that future.
After coups, civil war and years of military rule, Nigeria has maintained uninterrupted civilian rule since 1999. Yet low electoral participation, insecurity, weak institutions, economic hardship and pressure on civic space show that our democracy remains a work in progress.
This is why the work we do at @Dataphytefdn and @Dataphyte matters. By making public data accessible, strengthening evidence-based journalism, supporting civic participation and equipping citizens and institutions with the information to demand accountability, we contribute to the everyday work of deepening democracy.
Democracy is more than elections. It is the ability to know, question, participate and hold power accountable.
On this International Day of Democracy, we recommit to building a Nigeria where every citizen has the information, voice and space to shape the future.
