FO. Dennis Secretan ... of Bognor Regis. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Secretan.h… They just don't breed the likes of that super generation any more - which is a great shame and pity. Awarded the DFC. He survived.

The Kaffrarian Rifles Monument in the Hex River Valley marks the site of a serious train derailment that occurred on 11 September 1914 in the Hex River Pass. A troop train on its way to Cape Town carrying Kaffrarian Rifles troops destined to fight in German South West Africa, lost control while going down the Pass. The single steam locomotive heading the train was unable to brake adequately in the descent and derailed on a bend. The passenger coaches telescoped into each other resulting in the deaths of ten Non-Commissioned Officers and Men and leaving another one hundred and three Soldiers seriously injured. The Monument was erected by the Kaffrarian Rifles Association and the following names are inscribed on a Panel at the foot of the Memorial. 7638 Sergeant A.W. Singleton 1541 Corporal M. Deventer 2741 Private J.E. Blumrick 2909 Private R.J. Henley 2914 Private A.U. Moriarty 7705 Private J.E. Ringsall 7464 Private A.S.W. Symons 5942 Private C. van der Venter 2728 Private C.S. van der Venter 5045 Private H. van der M. Victor

Wind and rain couldn’t dampen the spirit at @StDominicsPriory today. In weather mirroring the cold, dark trenches of WWI, the Marist Uitenhage memorial finally arrived home. A deeply moving moment #LestWeForget #MaristBrothers #WWI

A 200+kg marble monument is usually routine for @PickfordsSA but today was different. Handled with absolute reverence, our 100+ year war memorial has been loaded in Joburg and starts its journey ‘Home’ to Port Elizabeth.

Bless ‘em All - today is #VJDay when we remember the British & Commonwealth soldiers of the ‘Forgotten Army’, but how to even begin to describe what that campaign was like? This artwork by Frank Pash, ‘Instead of Leave, Kohima’ perhaps says more than any photo could.
