This is nothing but stupid. They’re not even EU members, yet they act like the worst bureaucratic brake on progress. Eight EU countries already approved it, Denmark didn’t wait but Norway sits waiting on a decision from a union it doesn’t belong to, raising objections about speed limits and name changes. While they talk road safety, people die unnecessarily on Norwegian roads every year. Innovation that saves lives shouldn’t be held back by paperwork.
Looks like Norway🇳🇴 will follow an EU approval. This was answered today by the secretary of transport: «I am positive toward new vehicle technology, as it has the potential to address many of our mobility needs and improve road safety. It is essential that any technology introduced on Norwegian roads ensures road safety. There is continuous development of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) designed to support the driver and enhance safety; some of these systems have already become mandatory for the type-approval of new vehicles. When using advanced driver-assistance systems, the driver remains fully responsible for the operation of the vehicle under the Road Traffic Act. Some vehicle manufacturers have introduced advanced systems that allow the driver to keep their hands off the steering wheel for extended periods. Consequently, the system may create the impression that the vehicle is self-driving, even though the driver remains entirely responsible for the driving task. This creates an increased risk in situations where the system expects the driver to take control. Such systems do not meet the requirements set out in international regulations. One example is Tesla’s system—which has been renamed from "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)" to "Tesla Assisted Driving." Dutch authorities have applied for EU type-approval for the system, utilizing an exemption process provided for under EU regulations. If the EU approves the system, Norway will align with this decision in accordance with our obligations under the EEA Agreement. Some EU member states have already accepted the deviations from international regulations at a national level, while others have raised concerns regarding whether road safety is adequately ensured. These exceptions relate to requirements concerning driving without hands on the steering wheel on motorways, as well as compliance with speed limits—provisions that Norway has worked hard to include in the regulatory framework. On behalf of Norway, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen) raised concerns during a meeting of the vehicle committee on June 30. The objective was to gauge the views of other countries regarding issues such as adherence to speed limits, inadequate or misleading driver information, and significant discrepancies between marketing materials and the user manual. Since this meeting, it has been established that the system is capable of exceeding speed limits. It remains unclear how other member states will address this as the EU process continues. Furthermore, Tesla has released some of the underlying documentation; the marketing regarding the system's safety potential has been somewhat tempered, and the potentially misleading name "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)" has been changed. On Tesla’s Norwegian website, the system is now referred to as "Tesla Assisted Driving" (*Tesla Assistert Kjøring*). The Norwegian Public Roads Administration notes that the driver-assistance system appears to handle standard traffic situations well. However, it remains uncertain to what extent the new technology can ensure that the driver is prepared to take control immediately—should the system fail or prove unable to manage unforeseen situations. In this matter, I believe that road safety is best safeguarded by Norway awaiting the EU’s decision. Should the EU adopt the system, Norway will align itself with it, in accordance with our obligations under the EEA Agreement. It is also crucial that drivers who will use the system receive thorough training, ensuring they understand how the system functions and its limitations, while remaining aware that the driver always retains responsibility for the operation of the vehicle. It is highly important that the Norwegian Public Roads Administration continues its efforts to safeguard road safety while participating in the development of international regulations for both driver-assistance systems and automated driving.»

Why did Tesla name its self-driving system "Full Self-Driving", while the version you can buy is only approved as a Level 2 system worldwide? Why didn't they pick a name that sounds more like a driver *assistance* system, which it has been for so many years? The answer is actually quite simple, if you understand how Tesla probably thinks about it. To Tesla, the entire system is essentially software. Sure, it needs hardware to run, but the incredibly hard nut to crack was never about the hardware, but the software element. Now how do you name software? You name it after what the desired end functionality is! Evernote didn't call their product "Barelynote" while it was in beta but already being used. Notion wasn't "Inkling" at the beginning. Microsoft didn't start with "HalfNote" until it became OneNote. And so on. Of course not! You call the product for what it will be when it's "done". And while it is in development, but already in people's hands, you add a "Beta" label to it. That's what Tesla did. The mistake they made? Assuming that the broad public out there understands software terminology. Ask Aunt Karen if she knows what "beta" means. Or: assuming that their enemies wouldn't use the naming strategy against them. Could Tesla reverse time, I am sure they would've picked a different name, until the system became what it is today on all vehicles in their commercial robotaxi service: "Full Self-Driving" (PS: FWIW, I never really liked Full Self-Driving, for the very reason that we never got "Quarter Self-Driving", or "Half Self-Driving"...)

Dear Prime Minister Ambani, Please accept my humble apologies for not realizing that you are the real boss of India. Naturally, you would prefer to maintain your monopolistic exploitation of the great people of India, but would you nonetheless consider allowing Starlink to compete? There are many areas of India, as there are in all countries, with no Internet access, which denies children the opportunity for education and for small businesses the opportunity to sell their goods to a global market. Starlink would change their lives for the better. Thank you 🙏

@robotinreallife @BMV
