Very happy to start at @IPPP_Durham as an Assistant Professor in Particle Physics Phenomenology on August 1st! Looking forward to work with @martinmbauer, @spannowsky and all the other fine people at IPPP!

For those keeping up with the #STFC omnishambles, the latest excuse is defense. Does this make the previous statements (no cuts, record settlement for UKRI) untrue? researchprofessionalnews.com…

Looks a lot like the UK government through @biztradegovuk has jettisoned the Haldane Principle. @UKRI_News is no longer an arms length body, it is a govt approved public money to private (US) capital laundering scheme. @RobinBisson with the scoop: researchprofessionalnews.com…

🚨 The game UKRI is playing becomes clearer and clearer: Stop funding fundamental research projects and reduce the headcount in research councils, all this to allow big direct injections of cash into private industry.
If only this went into UK-based companies... 🫣

Sci populists can’t hide the ball for 5 minutes.
What is the “benefit to humankind” of FTL alien telephones, superdeterminism and carrying water for bullshit artists like Eric Weinstein.
Shitting on productive physicists for the titillation of contrarians is the game here.

UKRI’s cuts are now damaging the UK’s reputation abroad.🧪🌍
Yifang Wang (Chinese Academy of Sciences) calls abandoning LHCb leadership “irresponsible”. Yu-Gang Ma (East China Normal University) warns it “erodes the UK’s credibility”.

We would not judge defence or healthcare budgets mainly by their contribution to immediate economic growth
Why then do politicians across parties insist that science funding must justify itself primarily by producing fast economic growth rather than by producing science?
Here is my view on what’s wrong with funding of scientific research in the UK, and how I would change the focus if it was up to me!
There is a long list of things that UKRI needs to weigh when making decisions about funding for research and facilities, and driving growth is not one of them. The reason is that the whole of UKRI’s portfolio is essential for driving growth - indeed the research ecosystem is one of the necessary foundations of growth. The point I made at the Labour Conference is quite simple. UKRI’s budget is 0.65% of government expenditure, at a little under £10 Bn per year. That is a very tiny leaver when seen through the prism of attempting to use it to make a step change in economic growth - especially when the leaders of UKRI and the Research Councils are not economists and should not be economists! Their expertise lies in research. BUT, and this is the key point - if by fiddling around trying to use this tiny budget (in relative terms) to make a noticeable change in growth you damage the fundamentals, then you run the real risk of damaging the growth potential of the rest of the economy. Universities, research labs, education and inspiration are all essential for growth. This is what UKRI should be focused on because they are the custodians of this VERY valuable but fragile world-leading ecosystem. So, I would say to UKRI, do the thing you are supposed to do, do it well on behalf of the rest of the economy, and do nothing else.

“UKRI should not be trying to “engineer growth” via the research budget, according to star physicist Brian Cox, who warned of “serious problems” in the nation’s science system, including a “borderline existential” situation in physics and astronomy.”

Did someone mention to the minister the funding crisis STFC is going through and the hundreds of Early-Careeer researchers who will have to leave the country rather than pursuing a career in the UK?

📢 The pressure is mounting on UKRI.
Evidence suggests the original STFC minutes reflected what Council was actually shown— "a major shift of funding from curiosity-driven research to priority areas".

When I did my diploma in Germany, every student had to pass 8 oral examinations an hour each with different professors. Four after 3-4 semesters and four after 8-9. Germany had and has no student fees

The problem is in the economics of it. To be able to talk with each student individually, we need to increase the faculty/student ratio dramatically. Which means increasing tuition. But with AI the opportunity cost of tuition rises even more.

Fiona Fox, CEO of the Science Media Centre argues that whatever the rights and wrongs of the recent cuts to physics, UKRI should be praised for being prepared to face the media and answer the tough questions.

@thetimes highlights a letter from @LHCbExperiment deputy spokesperson Paula Collins. Sad to see the same line from govt (@biztradegovuk ?) about UK being second-largest funder. This just means you're paying in full for a facility your researchers won't be benefitting from.

As an Italian working on LHCb, I wouldn’t make the same choice today given the UKRI cuts to research funding.

I've been struggling to put into words how it feels to watch the UK abandon the future of @LHCbExperiment after leading it for over 30 years. I started on LHCb in 2003 in the Oxford team of Neville Harnew, one of the driving forces behind LHCb. A short 🧵
