In June, researchers used the world’s most powerful laser to create a particle beam, which they sent blasting through a concrete wall and into a black van. The exercise produced a new sort of photograph—one that doesn’t rely on light at all.
After processing the data, the team has now released images: a shadow of a pile of lead blocks perched between the wall and the van.
For the first time, the researchers showed the images were created almost entirely by muons, high energy particles produced by the laser, they reported in a preprint.
Such on-demand muon beams could eventually be used to reveal objects that light cannot penetrate, from subsurface archaeological structures to concealed nuclear materials shipped across borders. scim.ag/4Avwd7O @NewsfromScience

EXC: British govt is searching for a UK alternative to Palantir, as the PM’s “buy British” push triggers hunt for homegrown replacement for the controversial US software group in NHS and MoD
Ministers have identified a handful of UK technology companies they hope might be candidates to take over the health service’s Federated Data Platform, as they consider applying a break clause in Palantir’s contract in March next year, people familiar with the matter told the FT
A defence minister has also told parliament that the govt is sounding out alternative suppliers for its MoD contract

Climate change is already affecting our communities. We cannot afford to treat it as a political game.
We have responsibility to protect the places we call home and build a safer, better future for the next generation.
Net Zero isn’t an ambition we can put on hold. It’s essential.
Britain has shown what climate leadership can look like. We must keep moving forward - not let political infighting stand in the way of the progress our communities and our planet depend on.
This Labour government will protect our communities and protect our future.

“I am concerned that, a fortnight on from the new government taking office, we are yet to see a detailed statement about what the abolition of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology will mean in practice. “

1/ Sharing knowledge is how we keep pace with AI’s growing capabilities, and make the technology safer. It underlines the whole reason @AISecurityInst was set up - to use Britain’s world-leading expertise to understand and get ahead of new challenges like this one.
On July 28th, we identified an incident during a routine cyber evaluation in which AI agents took sustained, unsanctioned actions directed at real people and organisations.
The behaviour came mostly from one model (Anthropic's Mythos 5), with a small number of events from another (OpenAI's GPT-5.6-Sol). In the most serious case, an agent used social engineering to try and get malicious code into an open-source project.
As was standard in our cyber testing, we had intentionally permitted internet access, and model-provider cyber classifiers were deliberately disabled - conditions that do not reflect how frontier models are made available to the public.
Even under test conditions, this incident is significant: it is the first time we have seen risks around autonomy and deception manifest this clearly in the real world.
We are taking this incident seriously and working with labs, involved parties, and others to improve evaluation standards and best practice for disclosure - and sharing this openly so others can learn.
You can read the incident report and full technical document here: aisi.gov.uk/blog/incident-re…

It’s called big science for a reason.
The Katrin particle detector was built only a few hundred kilometers away from the lab in Karlsruhe, Germany, where it would end up. But because of its size, it had to travel by barge: down the Danube River, across the Black and Mediterranean Seas, around the Iberian Peninsula, through the English Channel, and up the Rhine. quantamagazine.org/experimen…
Fusion would be a game-changer for the UK (and the world) ⚡️
We were pleased to see record funding announced for it in March.
The new government will hopefully continue and strengthen that investment.

Nuclear power has always carried the risk of a chain reaction spiraling out of control.
Francesco Sciortino, co-founder and CEO of @proximafusion, says fusion doesn't carry that risk.
Get it right, and it's an energy source that doesn't run dry.

“Little wonder we’re still obsessed with something that mattered so much to them too.”
Prof @william_whyte sets the British Museum's sold-out autumn exhibition in context, explaining how the nineteenth century turned an eleventh century embroidery into a national icon and why we are still drawn to it. ⬇️
