It’s been a rought first 24 days of 2024 for the media industry. One bright spot: We at @texastribguild are unionizing!
We want to build a better, stronger, more equitable news organization. For the good of the Tribune, for the good of Texas.
My first week post-Texas Tribune, I just want to say I’ve been touched by the kind words of my friends and former colleagues. You guys are wonderful ❤️🧵
My kudos to all the hardworking folks across depts who make the whole place run - be it editorial, photo, data viz, design, audience, membership, finance, audience, product - it’s a huge effort.

I was laid off by The Texas Tribune yesterday after more than 10 years there — most spent centering communities of color in my reporting.
This is my last story, which was set to run before I was called in. This is the kind of reporting I was doing: texastribune.org/2023/08/24/…

Well, for reasons still unclear to me, and as I'm sure you know by now, The Texas Tribune, my employer since 2010, decided to lay off 11 of its staff this week, including myself and our entire multimedia team. 🧵
Alas. I’m sad to say I was among the 11 employees cut from the Texas Tribune this week. It’s been a shock, to say the least. There are few orgs I’ve felt prouder to work for in my career. washingtonpost.com/media/202…

Imagine you have a mental health issue.
You're struggling to find housing, or health care, or both. You're stressed, which makes your issue worse.
One day, you decompensate in public. Someone gets scared, and calls the police.
This is what could happen to you in Pennsylvania🧵

Two national investigative journalism awards in one week for @SpotlightPA, which two years ago was nothing but a great idea. Absolutely incredible.
This team is 🔥.

This story sent me paddling down the Colorado River, into abandoned mining pits and to the state Capitol, a pecan orchard and two massive mining operations in the Hill Country, among other destinations.
