This is Sue’s story. But it could be the story of any of the roughly half a dozen families I spoke to for this investigation. And it’s the story of what failure over three decades means for real people, a mother and son. spotlightpa.org/news/2025/07…

But there are limitations to what a criminal lockup can provide for immigrants like Carlos, who do not speak English fluently. Our story examines how the jail contributed to his prolonged detention and his family's suffering in his absence. Link to come shortly.

So if you want facts about this ruling that's become fodder or for political attacks, read @DTOhl and @SpotlightPA. Main point: No one is being immediately released due to this ruling. spotlightpa.org/news/2026/07…

Pa. lawmakers blew the deadline to do something about felony murder. So, what happens now? Did the prison doors open over the weekend and let 1,100 people out? Contrary to recent rhetoric, no! No, they did not. My story about what you need to know is at spotlightpa dot org.

More on what I mean by “felony murder” also known as second degree murder in this old thread 👇xitter.cf/DTOhl/status/156934704…

Can't overstate how potentially monumental this case is. For comparison, the juvenile lifer resentencing cases dealt with roughly 500 people. This could affect double.
News: The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has struck down a state law mandating life sentences without parole for individuals found guilt of second degree murder -- i.e., being a getaway driver in a fatal robbery. Via @DTOhl spotlightpa.org/news/2026/03…

Ellie has dedicated most of her career to the Washington Post. She is and has always been one of the most talented journalists I know. She’s not lying when she says the Post was her dream. She does not deserve this.
It was a dream to report for the Washington Post. I’m heartbroken to be among those laid off today. This profile was one of my last bylines. I want to keep telling stories that matter. If you’re hiring, DM me or email: esilverman11(@)gmail(dot)com washingtonpost.com/investiga…
