1/ Kelechi Nwaozuzu studied Computer Science but realised mid-way through that she didn't want to spend her life writing code. So she gravitated to her interests, and it led her to @Cafeonenig I sat down with @kaycn to learn how she tripled its revenue in the first year. 🧵

Behind every B2B buyer is a human being. Spotify wrote each target CMO a song in their favourite genre, with lyrics from their data, and mailed them a platinum record. The year it ran, Spotify Advertising passed $1 billion in ad sales for the first time. #CampaignOfTheWeek

Moats! Does anyone have one anymore? Yes. Yes, they do. But only a small subset of what people call moats create real long-term value and defensibility. Not actually a moat: 1. Distribution: This does matter more than ever. Building products has gotten easier, but getting them to customers has not. Distribution, however, does not create durable defensibility. It helps create the raw ingredients for one, but it is not itself a moat. 2. Execution: Yes, speed is critical for startups. But a company that has to sprint forever is not a good business. Ultimately, it will misstep, slow down, and competition will catch up. Speed gives a company more shots on goal as it tries to build a great product and a great business, but it must eventually find something more durable. 3. Brand: The idea is that when everyone is building the same thing, the most resonant brand will win. But for startups, brand works more like customer acquisition spend: Put money in, get growth out. It’s not something that will effectively keep others from competing long-term. Brand can become a true moat over time (as with Coke or Nike or Apple), but it just takes too long to really matter for most startups. What you're looking for is compounding advantages: a self-reinforcing flywheel that gets stronger and stronger over time, ultimately making a company very hard to compete with long-term. There are only four compounding advantages that really matter. Every major tech company has at least one: 1. Switching costs: The more deeply embedded a product is in the way a customer works, the harder it is for that customer to switch. This increases retention and revenue per customer, which can be reinvested into the product. 2. Network effects: The more users a product has, the better it gets for everyone. This increases engagement and attracts more users. 3. Scale economies: The more volume a company has, the larger and more efficient its operations can be. This lowers unit costs, funding lower prices or a better product at the same price, further driving up volume. 4. Data effects: The more usage a product has, the more data it generates. This data can be used to improve the product and increase usage. If you can’t see the potential for any in the startup you’re considering joining, that’s a red flag. In today’s incredible post, @danhockenmaier shares a simple framework you can run in about an hour after getting an offer: 1. Identify a startup’s compounding advantage 2. Gauge how strong it could get 3. Measure whether it’s working Inside: dozens of real company examples, the specific metrics to track, and benchmarks for what good and great look like. I’m one of those people who gets frustrated watching everyone reach for their phone the moment something beautiful happens. Meta’s new glasses campaign reframes that: you don’t have to choose between being present and capturing the moment. You can have both. #CampaignOfTheWeek

A simple idea that works across every scenario you can imagine. Meta should run this as a series for years.

Genius.
This Meta Glasses commercial at the US Open was absolutely brilliant. At the end of the day, your phone might just stay in your pocket. $META is coming for your lunch, $AAPL. Watch out.

I’m not sure we fully understand how significant this is $500k raised in less than a week of launch, 4m+ users, $170+ rev…. It’s absolutely insane I’ve always believed that with the tech available today, profound products would emerge from Africa…the talent was never the problem, the minds, creativity, technical skills were always here what held many people back was the cost of getting started…. Time was the most expensive thing, then you needed a team, some funds just to get a product to market AI has changed that narrative… the cost of building and launching products is falling and more people can now turn ideas into reality without needing the resources that used to be ablocker Lagoslife is a glimpse of what’s possible and I know so much more will come out of Africa. Shalom has broken a mental barrier for many of us, showing us what’s possible when African builders have the tools to bring their ideas to life Now is the best time to build. Start now!

“In a just world, your very best call center people would earn a six-figure salary.” Stumbled on this Rory Sutherland talk a few months ago & this part came back to me this customer service week. His argument: we celebrate winning customers & measure retention far less seriously

To be clear, retention is bigger than customer service. It’s shaped by how well the product works and by many other decisions across the business. Customer service just happens to be where all of it meets the customer.

If you work in customer service or support, I’d like to hear how your team’s saves get tracked, if at all.
