The reason Andrew T*te and his ilk appeal to young men is because he provides a role model to boys who have none, or lack purpose or direction; he tells insecure kids they can be strong and powerful if they are like him. While lessons can be useful, the real way tackle this is to provide better models of meaning and purpose to them; teach them to see themselves as scientists, athletes, scholars, musicians. That comes through school cultures that constantly demonstrate and model the value of those ambitions, and teach children to a high standard of success. Because feeling successful is the antidote to childish, cartoonish, cruel forms of masculinity and potency. A few assemblies on 'don't be sexist' won't scratch the surface of a child's self-image, but it will make adults feel like they have done something.

1/3 After some great training with @nickpointer_ on instructional coaching, it helped me reflect on why instructional coaching is more likely to fail without agreed upon principles for teaching and learning in a school...

2/3 ...even if we assume you were able to help a coachee build a new mental model, if other colleagues in their community actively fight against this, the social pressure to conform to the norms of the community may outweigh the other mechanisms which make IC effective.

3/3 An example of this might be cold call. Even if a coachee agrees on its benefits, if others around them hold onto negative entrenched views it may be a barrier to classroom implementation. @mrbartonmaths @ollie_lovell

You’ve done an incredible job of developing maths education. Thank you, Mark.
On this day, 10 years ago, I founded La Salle Education. It has been an incredibly difficult but hugely rewarding decade in which an initial idea has grown into something wonderful. Here is a short thread on some of my reflections… and a rather big personal announcement.

Can anyone recommend any research or books on teacher development and teacher change at the school level? I've just read @PearceMrs book (What every teacher needs to know) and now reading @dylanwiliam's book (Leadership for Teacher Learning).Maybe @PepsMccrea might know?

So pleased that the Mr Barton Maths podcast seems to be back in action! Two great recent eps! I’m only half way through the @PepsMccrea ep and already lots to reflect on. Here’s a thread on my thoughts about productive failure (@mrbartonmaths).

As a final point, it is important to also remember that this form of learning may be less efficient than more guided methods. This is a point which Sweller made in conversation with @ollie_lovell. Essentially a large amount of time is spent developing a worked example.
