Nagasaki’s Urakami Cathedral was reduced to ruins by the atomic bomb on 9 August 1945. Almost everything was obliterated, even vaporised. Among the devastation, the head of a statue of the Virgin Mary survived. It has been placed in this chapel at the rebuilt cathedral.

In Nagasaki, sitting at the desk used by St Maximilian Kolbe during his six years at the Franciscan friary. Five years later his life would end in Auschwitz where he gave his life for another prisoner. To sit here is to feel the weight of history, faith & extraordinary sacrifice

“Above all, the central proclamation of the presence & love of the Risen Christ; the inner experience of his presence & love, sparked by that proclamation; & finally, the beginning of a journey of knowing & loving Christ, made possible by the recipient’s…free and sincere heart”

Kerygma kerygma kerygma “Added to this is the need to rethink how we proclaim the Gospel, prioritizing narrative forms over the mere transmission of abstract concepts. This effort is essential for preparing each human heart (cf. Mt 13:3–8) for an authentic encounter”

“For this very reason, the transmission of the faith today requires, in a particular way, the evangelization of adults and a move beyond pastoral ministry focused solely on the catechesis of children and adolescents” - Venite Ad Me 41-42.

It is impossible to reflect on Korea without considering the division of the peninsula, the Korean War and the families and communities separated by history. Christian communities, too, experienced deep suffering and disruption.

These realities give particular depth to the Christian call to pray and work for peace, reconciliation and human dignity. The sketch of this grand mosaic, in the Church of Repentance and Atonement, was completed by 7 North Korean artists over 40 days.

Grateful for the work of the World Youth Day office on Korea for their briefing as we prepare for Australian pilgrims to encounter Christ and the universal church in Seoul in 2027

There is a difference between principled protest & destructive bad behaviour. Looting, arson and violence don’t fix schools, lower living costs or improve public services. When the cause gets lost in the chaos, it’s hard to see anything but immaturity, entitlement & lawlessness.

The story of Korean Catholics challenges easy assumptions about how Christianity spreads. Before foreign missionaries could work openly, Korean laypeople were studying the faith, forming communities, sustaining one another in persecution. It is a history of initiative from within

Korean Catholic history carries the memory of thousands who suffered persecution for faith. Among them was St Andrew Kim Taegon, Korea’s first native-born Catholic priest, executed in 1846. Religious freedom, conscience, fidelity to Christ have often come at profound cost 🇰🇷

Images of martyrdom from Seoul, remembering those who gave their lives for Christ and His Church. May the blood of the martyrs be the seed of faith, their witness strengthen us, and their souls rest in the eternal peace of our Christ

As we prepare for @eucharist28 please pray for our RCIA and Sacramental Teams Retreat Day. We are grateful for the generosity and commitment of these leaders as they serve their parish and wider Church. We hope today will be a time of renewal and continued conversion for them 🙏

The Fifth Element is around the bend
JUST IN: Elon Musk unveils the Tesla Roadster by launching it off a ramp before the car flipped in midair and safely landed on the ground. The car is a collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX. One of the most insane things I've ever seen.

We can be sacramentally intimate at the altar while remaining relationally distant in the pews. The Eucharist is not merely an individual encounter with the divine; by its very nature, the sacrament of “koinonia” draws us into communion with one another: catholicweekly.com.au/from-a…

“I went back to Newman and read bits and pieces of different works I knew,” he said. “Knowing that Newman went through these dark periods in his life gave me hope that maybe I could get through these dark periods too, and this would pass. And it did pass” catholicweekly.com.au/lead-k…

The first mission of the Church is to help people be attentive to the profound questions of life: those concerning our origin and our destiny, as well as those concerning the meaning of love and suffering. The logic of profit at all costs and the manipulation of information risk exerting undue pressure on people to conform to a lifestyle centred on the consumption of material goods, but our hearts are made to look upwards. #GeneralAudience
