Identify, acquire, develop, and retain the best. Empower them to execute their role with opportunities to grow. Know weaknesses. Repeat.

Jackie Graves was a true trailblazer, shaping the NFL as one of the most influential African American scouts of the 1960s and 1970s. That incredible football legacy lived on in his son, Rod Graves, who carved out a distinguished NFL career! Click the link in bio to listen.

I'm pumped for a day filled with football and to know that tomorrow we kick off our Fall semester of the Film Evaluation Course. For the next 16 weeks we'll be working to understand how to help our students make the next jump in their development.

Every person comes with their own background in the game and many are aiming at different targets, so finding a development path that matches their needs has become one of my favorite aspects of what we do.

Every fan can see a RB explode through a crease and break off a big gain. You don't need expertise to see the size, speed, or strength. Where the evaluator distinguishes themselves is in understanding which parts of that big play were driven by what the RB contributed

Some of it could be the runner. Vision, burst, when to cut. Some could be the O-line, a double team that made the gap wide enough to drive a truck through. Some could be a defender who busted his assignment. Only one of those tells you what the RB can actually do.

That's the difference between observation and evaluation. Observation tells you what happened. Evaluation tells you why. Why is the only thing you can project forward.

Putting your thoughts and work out there can be nerve-wracking. I'm going through a bit of that myself right now. I see it with our students as well. Sometimes they hold off on submitting that 1st report as they are anxious for the feedback process.

No one likes finding out where they missed something or where an argument is thin or unclear. But that is where the growth comes from. Those feedback loops are critical. That's why we built the course around it.

Last night I hosted a live Q&A for people trying to grow their career in football. For more than two hours we talked through how to build relationships, how to prove you can do the work, and what the path looks like without connections. Thank you to everyone who showed up.

Most people trying to break into football think they have a networking problem. They don't. They have a different problem, and most of them can't see it. I'll get into what I mean at Thursday's live Q&A. April 30, 7pm ET on Zoom. Register: us02web.zoom.us/meeting/regi…
