It was a pleasure writing this report on mission oriented procurement with @MazzucatoM and the Camden team. Summary thread from @nickcp1 below, and the full paper is here: ucl.ac.uk/bartlett/public-pu…
A thread on public procurement...For the last 5 years, Camden have been on a journey towards mission-driven government. Following on from the launch of our Community Wealth Fund, we have been working with @IIPP to explore mission-driven procurement /1
Pleasure to work on this as one of my final projects @IIPP_UCL with @MazzucatoM, @GraceWyld, @nickcp1 and others

The only kind of drag the Tories are OK with
all this talk about potential future tax cuts is obfuscating the UK’s biggest tax rise in half a century
it’s one that many people may not even notice
let’s talk about fiscal drag 🧵

In the most British news imaginable, the inquiry into why Edinburgh's tram project took so long and was so expensive is criticised for taking too long and being too expensive bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-e…
The UK's backwards tax system means that "the majority of investment flows into the capture and ownership of assets such as property, infrastructure or financial assets. This money does not then flow into the creation of new businesses, inventions or... useful infrastructure"
Whatever the politics of abandoning a wealth tax, the economics are terrible, especially if your key objective is growth. The UK's current taxation system encourages rent extraction over productive investment. Me in @guardian

I discovered that gold mining is just the start of it. Our appetite for raw materials is rising rapidly 👇
We like to convince ourselves the world is becoming DEmaterialised.
Not a bit of it. We’re ever MORE reliant on the rock and metal and fuels we pull out of the ground.

One of our most popular recent blogs was written by @rbellinson and @DanWainwright15. In it, they explain the thinking behind a new IIPP report on tackling poverty on a local level, using the London Borough of Camden as an example.

One extremely fun way out for Truss from the 'u-turn - spending cuts - credibility' triangle of doom would be a big wealth tax. Popular, pro-growth, radical: what's not to like (eg see lse.ac.uk/International-Ineq…)
Great thread bringing together housing affordability, climate & biodiversity crises. Blindly building more homes - even low carbon ones! - won’t solve the problems of too much finance and not enough insulation
Can England build all the homes the govt says we need *whilst* staying within our carbon budget & achieving national biodiversity policy goals?
The answer's 🤯

"In the short run, there are clearly limits on what policy can do to limit supply-shocks driven by wars or pandemics. The issue becomes rather how to distribute the pain across the economy."
@jryancollins lays out options for the government. Allowing destitution is a choice.
The Bank of England's interest rate hike will make the predicted recession worse. Fiscal policy is needed to address supply side shocks and the Bank should revisit its tool box. Me for @IIPP_UCL blog.
